Future Vintage is a radioshow dedicated to discovering both new and old music. It's broadcasted every sunday from 23.00-24.00 on Dutch public radiostation Radio 6. The show is presented by Melodee & Radna, with Boye behind the turntables. FutureVintage.net is the portal to the best shows from our archive, new podcasts and news & views about the music we listen to. Expect soul/funk/jazz legends, fresh producers, interviews, rare and not so rare disco, hiphop, house music and a lot of other great music we like to share with you.
Once a year, more then 40 museums in Amsterdam open their doors from 7pm until 2am and welcome about 26.000 visitors during Museum Night. Every museum organises a special program, with guided tours, performances, film, food and music. It’s the perfect night to discover Amsterdam in a different way, and take a look not only in the famous, but also hidden treasures the city has to offer.
This year some Future Vintage friends are part of the Museum Night programme (and no, that’s no coincidence). For instance Saint Proper and the More Tea, Vicar? DJs are playing in Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, one of the loveliest churches of the city. One of the More Tea fellows also organised a Karoake Choir, where you can actually sing with a 13 piece choir supporting you. In the meantime Tom Trago will play at the Rembrandthuis his favourite songs about money - or the lack of it (remember our all about the money Future Vintage show?). In the Foam museum for photography, where the Hyena Men pictures are still on show, Thomas Gesthuizen will play afrobeat and african hiphop, while Deluge will be doing the visuals.
With so many things to do and see it’s best to make your own selection at n8.nl. Or simply get lost in the city and watch out for the big lightcubes in front of museums you might never heard of. Tickets are still on sale and if you e-mail to info@futurevintage.net, I’ll put the first 5 on the list for the secret afterparty, somewhere under a bridge. Enjoy your n8.
In september KC the Funkaholic was already announcing his Boogie Bash in Paradiso, and with 6 days left here’s a reminder. The charming (selfmade) flyer by KC says it all; expect music from Rick James to James Pants, with a focus on the dancefloor and a lot of fun. Since KC hopes for some funky moves from the audience, he made a top 5 of youtube video’s. Practice one dance a day, and start with the most simple one - the Oak Tree - to get in shape before friday the 31st. KC will be playing with Manga in the Paradiso basement, starting at midnight.
There’s a guestlist for Future Vintage listeners/readers, just e-mail us, first come, first served!
Yes, Amsterdam Dance Event that is. Every year around this time dance related labels, promoters and artists hook up in Amsterdam for some networking and talent scouting, but for most of us ADE is mainly about 3 days of parties. While a lot of the line-up is not exactly my cup of tea, there is always some interesting stuff going on. Since last year the Bimhuis (usually the authority on jazz in the Netherlands and abroad) is also part of ADE. On friday the 24th, for the second time Beatdimensions will take over the Bim. After the legendary edition with Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke, now Dimlite, Mike Slott and Take are invited by Juha and Cinnaman to play their futuristic beats & beyond. For more info on the Bimhuis line up, visit audioculture.org, where our friend Juha also did an interview with Daedelus, who’s performing this tuesday at Smart Project Space.
As fans of his longtime running radioshow might already know; Gilles Peterson is also in town. In London he just started again with his weekly monday night in Bar Rumba (I remember going to the last one a few years ago), in Amsterdam he will be playing at KSpace and Bar Struik on the 23rd, together with Brownswood affiliates thBpm and Lefto. With Melodee hosting an Appletree night at Bitterzoet, 1.1 / Mamiko playing in Studio K, DROP inviting fresh producers at OneFourOne for a beatbattle and Tom Trago and San Proper doing another Le Pop at Canvas, it’s hard to choose. What are you going to do?
To get your dancing shoes on, here’s a set Tom Trago did recently at Dekmantel (thanks to Rush Hour):
And here’s a mix + interview with local 8 Bit hero Hayzee, who plays at DROP (thanks to Little D Soundlab):
After reading some e-mails from upset Future Vintage listeners, (”I miss my weekly podcast, where are you guys?!”) I felt it was time for a little update again. No we didn’t left, it’s just that we don’t record any shows at the moment, since we haven’t find the right place to start it again. Behind the scenes we are still working on that, and it seems January will be the time for a Future Vintage radio comeback.
In the meantime, the FV crew is busy as usual. Melodee is for instance flying to Jakarta this week (after just coming back from shows in Berlin), together with KC the Funkaholic to perform on a festival with La Melodia. They have a new website by the way, designed by Mr. Punchdouble, who also designed this blog. Then Rush Hour brought the exciting news that Tom ‘Teacher’ Trago is about to release his first solo outing since 3 years. You can already hear a snippet of Passion, the promo 12″ for Tom’s upcoming album Voyage Direct. And then yours truly is busy organising the Amsterdam Museum Night, which take place the 1st of november. With 41 museums collaborating, a lot of interesting exhibitions and Saint Proper, More Tea, Vicar?, Tom, Aardvarck and others playing at different locations troughout the city, it promises to be a wonderful night. More music in the next post, for now, take a sneak peek inside Tom’s studio, thanks to Ondergrond.TV.
When I was still living in Utrecht and listening mainly to hiphopmusic, I heard about the Disco3000 parties but never went there. Luckily, Disco3000 is back, launching again this friday at Paradiso with Antal, San Proper, and Trus’ Me (Manchester) playing upstairs. Expect ‘deep disco, deeply rooted house & future musics’ the invitation says. After the fun we had last friday at the (excellent) James Pants concert, I’m sure this will be another great night to start your weekend with - the boogie is back.
To get in the mood, go to the Disco3000hyve or check some mixes online, at the RushHour website I found for example Antal’s deep disco mix:
And here’s a nice podcast Trus’ Me did a while ago:
Door opens at 00.00, the next Disco3000 will be the 5th of december 2008. See you there!
On 13th of September we recorded the second show at Pure Jazz Festival. This was the first time Melodee, Tom and I were together again after more then a month, so it was nice to catch up and do a show again - good vibes all over. We were happily surprised by the performance of M.T.C., 2 young musicians from Rotterdam (thanks Aardvarck and Mamiko for recommending them). Also the one and only San Proper dropped by and played some great tunes in the second hour. And Tom was freaking the jingles like a mad professor while we gathered a nice crowd this evening (with even Dutch superstar radiopresenter Giel Beelen staying for an hour). Thanks to everyone for coming over, we hope do more shows like this, next time in Amsterdam.
