Future Vintage is a radioshow dedicated to discovering both the history and the future of soul, funk, jazz, hiphop and house music. The show is presented by Melodee & Radna, together with various guest DJ's. Future Vintage broadcasts every two weeks in collaboration with Dutch public network VPRO 3voor12. On FutureVintage.net you'll find the best shows from our archive, new podcasts and news & views about the music we like to share with you.
In the upcoming days there are quite some events looking for the perfect beat. This friday the Amsterdam-London connection will be in full effect during the Beatdimensions releaseparty in Plastic People (London). Cinnaman, who compiled the groundbreaking Beatdimensions compilation in 2007 now proudly presents a Volume 2. He plays alongside Danny Breaks, Mamiko Motto and Nwachukwu.
Next week, I hope our bedroomproducers’ favourite bedroomproducers will drop by at the second edition of the CD-R night at de Verdieping/ Trouw on august 7th. Here you can meet other musicians and share new music over a proper soundsystem. Simply burn a CD-R, then entrance is free & you even might bump into Aardvarck, Cinnaman or Mala (who plays at the Viral Radio party after).
And that’s not all. On august 8th we can all head to Rooms of Redbull (Amsterdam) for a Beatbattle organised by Nalden and Moovmnt. The line-up looks promising, with producers like Dyno, I.N.T, FS Green and Jay Bordeaux. If you want to compete for 500 euros worth of prize money, see more info here. PS: already checked the Rookie Season mixtape by FS Green? I noticed some FutureVintage skits – download here. Beatdimensions partner in crime Jay Scarlett also did a mix – download another perspective.
PIPS:LAB has been experimenting with the combination of technology and music for the past 10 years, taking theater into the year 3000. The past decade they’ve created 3 crazy shows and a number of special installations, of which one allows you to do graffiti by simply using lights?! When they created this ‘light-graffiti-technology’ back in 2003-2004 it was vastly copied by several advertising companies inserting it into commercials for Onitsuka Tiger and even Dutch Public Television.
With the coming of the dutch ‘Parade’, an on-tour event visiting the major cities, they decided to create a new show called Archie & The Bees. This performance centralizes the primary colors red, green and blue and links them to the elements of rhythm. Continue reading »
When the Gaslamp Killer plays, he seems to get so much into his music, he immediately grabs all the attention. That’s what he did in Trouw during the Viral Radio party with Brainfeeder affiliates Flying Lotus & Samiyam, and also during the 5daysoff festival the Gaslamp Killer was described as a ‘must see’ by Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant. It’s quite interesting how he recently (about 9 months ago) discovered dubstep, and before that played a bit more on the psychedelic tip. Now he plays an exiting mix of both.
To get a glimpse of what a GLK set looks like, see him in action at Barcelona’s Sonar festival here.
Just before he entered the Melkweg stage I had a little chat with him. Listen below and visit Viral Radio for more radiofun with the GLK.

Not every visitor of this blog might know that Future Vintage is able to produce a new show every week, because of the fact that it’s being broadcasted on the Dutch radiostation Radio 6. This station provides us with a recordingstudio and with a small budget, which enables us to make reports, to do interviews, to spend enough time to (re)search music, and to reach out to our audience online.
Sadly, last Friday we were unpleasantly surprised when Radio 6 told us that the show has to stop because of budget restrictions. To be specific, the financial situation of our broadcasting company demands that all freelancers will be fired. And eventhough we’re quite a lowbudget show, all three of us are freelancers which means we have to leave end of August, together with a few other shows.
In the current Dutch radiolandscape, it’s very hard to find a spot that still allows you to play whatever you want. 99% of the DJ’s nowadays has to use a playlist, compiled by the radiostation. Especially in times like these we feel that a show like Future Vintage, which has a carte blanche and tries to share a passion for music in an unpolished way, deserves a spot somewhere – even if it’s in the middle of the night. We all grew up with radio that felt personal, inspiring and that lets you discover new (and sometimes old) music. It would be a shame if this kind of radio would be gone for ever.
For now we’re not sure how to continue. We might look for another public radiostation, or forget the FM, and broadcast strictly online. While we’re developing a new plan, support from you is more than welcome. If you’re a Future Vintage listener and want the show to continue, please leave us a comment below or e-mail us (Dutch or English, whatever you prefer). We’d like to hear what you think, it helps us to develop a new way of continuing the show. So thank you, and stay tuned!
Sorry for the absence of the podcast from our previous show, but guess what? It’s online now! So for those of you who didn’t get a chance to check it out, please do so.
This show is produced by Melodee and myself since Radna was enjoying her well earned holiday in the States. We finally got a chance to put the hiphop special together featuring new tracks and some of our favorite picks over the past decades.
In addition to the hiphop special.. this week the blog will feature a special post containing some of the essential hiphop albums from the 80’s to this day.
We’re kicking off with one or our favorite hiphop tracks of 2009: Guilty Simpson – What To Do, who will later this year drop his album together with madlib… but more on that later! Also new tracks by Dj Premier, INT and Cassy combined with classics by EPMD, Nas and Blackmoon. PS: For everyone who after this show feels like hearing some more hiphopmusic – for a while there’s a new party in town: The Daisy Age. And this friday even Tom Trago is going back to his hiphoproots, playing alongside Mr. Mendel, Taco Fett and others in the beautiful Noorderlichtcafe upnorth (Amsterdam). More info here.

Last week there was no Future Vintage because our station Radio 6 was totally dedicated to the North Sea Jazz festival. And so were we. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to be there the whole weekend, but seeing an energetic show by Soil & Pimp Session from behind the curtain felt quite special. Melodee was busy hosting the Yukon stage, but more important, she also rocked the stage with La Melodia – see more photos by PunchDouble.
Next week we’re back with a show dedicated to hiphop (already recorded by Boye and Melodee) and later this summer we’ll have some special guest DJ’s coming over. So stay tuned! For now, check some current favorites of Melodee, she selected 10 tracks for Nalden.net by amongst others Dam Funk, Madlib and Lee Fields. Listen here.
In between holidays and preparations for the North Sea Jazz festival this weekend, we almost forgot to post the show of last sunday. But no worries, it’s here now. Melodee and Boye selected soul, boogie and brasil, and ended this episode with a 3 is the magic number dedicated to Michael Jackson. Since our funky technician Boye is temporary gone with the wind, I’m afraid the podcast isn’t working yet, but see below for download and stream as usual.
This sunday we are not broadcasting, because of the North Sea Jazz festival. Radio 6 is going to broadcast 31 hours of live radio from the festival, so be sure to check out Radio 6 this weekend for live concerts and reports from Rotterdam, where artists like Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, the original Nina Simone band, Soil & Pimp Sessions and…our own Melodee is performing. Yes indeed, apart from being a host at NSJ, Melodee will perform this saturday with La Melodia. Specially for North Sea Jazz she and producer INT will perfom together with an extended live band (I heard there is even a horn section involved). Be there if you can and for now, let’s get back to the program:

Being abroad I wasn’t able to post something sooner, but we’d like to pay tribute to Michael Jackson better late than never. Sometimes you don’t know what you got till it’s gone. With Michael Jackson, and all the gossip and larger than life stories surrounding him, you sometimes almost forgot the wonderfull music and innovation in showmanship he was responsible for. From the youthful energy with the Jackson 5 to the iconic Thriller album and beyond, his music will be in our collective memory forever.
When DJ Spinna did a tribute to Michael Jackson last week in Santos (New York), everyone was singing with basicly every song played. And dancing too. In front of the Apollo Theater in Harlem I saw both 8-year-old kids as older ladies wearing Michael Jackson T-shirts and waving with his records. The unifying and iconic power that Michael had is hard to find these days, but I’m sure many new artists will take inspiration from his legacy. There’s not much to add to what already has been said. So we simply say, Michael, rest in peace.
One of the most moving tributes I saw these days was by Stevie Wonder, during the memorial in Los Angeles. Watch it again:
