Egon presents Arthur Verocai

By Radna · August 24th, 2009, 21:44 · Things We Like

verocai studioIn the usual rainy Netherlands, these last weeks of sunshine and August heath feel quite amazing. Looking for some music that suits this temperature, I was happy to stumble upon an article by Egon (also known as manager of Stones Throw records) about producer, arranger and guitar player Arthur Verocai.

When exploring music from Brasil, Arthur Verocai might be the perfect introduction. Combining folk, funk and jazz, his self-titled debut album from 1972 is known as a classic for bringing Brasilian music into new directions. Mr. Verocai still performs these days, and did a show in Los Angeles earlier this year. For Egon that was the perfect reason to dig into his vinyl collection and shine some light on his favourite Arthur Verocai productions. Listen and read here.

PS: On the same NPR website I also enjoyed the article ‘A Eulogy for The Boombox‘ – “When the music was loud and unavoidable, we had to listen to each other.”

Hudson-Mohawke-001Mel Ross Mamiko Radna FV 2

Summer is not only about hanging out in the park, attending festivals and BBQ’s – for some people it’s hard work. But when that means working on something you love, there’s no reason to complain. Glasgowian, former turntablist and prince of emotronic Hudson Mohawke spent this summer in Amsterdam, where the locals hardly saw him because he was either playing abroad or hidden in the studio, finishing his highly anticipated debut album ‘Butter’, that will be released on Warp records October 12th. Friend and longtime Future Vintage collaborator Mamiko Motto was meanwhile working on the comeback of Hepcat Radio (and a bunch of other exciting projects). We were delighted to have both Mamiko and Hudson in our studio last week, for a little chat and DJ set with loads of new music. Yes, Hudson Mohawke even did an amazing set of his new tracks that haven’t been played on the radio thusfar. So have a taste of ‘Butter’ now, in this very special episode of Future Vintage.

FV records Mayer Hawthorne instore

By Radna · August 10th, 2009, 19:23 · Events

mayer-flyerWe’ve played his music and interviewed him before, but now we’re actually going to record a Future Vintage episode with Stones Throw newest soul artist Mayer Hawthorne. And you can be there. After the first Rush Hour instore we recorded with Dorian Concept and Harmonic 313, Future Vintage will host another instore at our favourite recordshop on august 20th.

This time no futuristic beats, but dusty soul 45’s. Mayer is not going to perform, but brings you, ‘just a DJ set’. And if you listened to the podcasts Mr. Hawthorne did before, you know that’s a must hear. A second soul connaisseur will also play his favourite tunes: DJ Delay from Waxwell Records will present you a  preview of Dutch Flowers – a compilation with Dutch soul, funk and disco that’s in the making.

Be there, have a drink with us and then spend the rest of this thursdaynight at De Duivel, where Delay & Mayer Hawthorne continue till late. Instore: 18.00 – 21.00 Duivel sessions: 22.00 – late Both free!

That was a pretty heavy weekend. While Radna and Melodee were getting their groove on at the Raw Rhythm Festival, I was partying at one of London’s finest clubs called Plastic People, for the Beat Dimensions 2 compilation release party. A heavy one that was indeed, but more on the festival and the release party later on…

This week we invited Jorn Konijn, one of Future Vintage’s steady listners and a collector of 60’s-70’s Brasilian music. For this show he dug in the crates and came up with three bangers from his favorite artist Jorge Bem.
Along side the return of ‘three is the magic number’ we’ve got new tracks by Mocky and Alison Crockett, plus an unknown boogie banger, which will soon be released on the amazing disco / boogie / soul reissue label PPU !

Letta Mbulu – What is wrong with grooving [random records]
Alison Crockett – Old Country [cdr]
Jay Hatts – Playin Her ft. Rones [cdr]
Dee Edwards – Why Can’t There Be Love [vogue records]
The Blackbyrds – Rock Creek Park [fantasy]
Kid Creole & The Coconuts – I’m A Wonderful Thing Baby [island]
The Verdict – That’s Where I Come In [nuance]
Roy Ayers – Everybody []
*three is the magic number*
Jorge Ben – Eu sou da pesada [philips]
Jorge Ben – Maria Domingas [philips]
Jorge Ben – Ponta De Lança Africano [philips]
*three is the magic number*
