With a daring campaign, the upcoming edition ofthe TodaysArt festival this weekend, focuses on different forms of conflict. “History shows that whenever people face many questions, conflict ensues. Not necessarily violent, but conflict nonetheless. It is like a chemical reaction: energy is unleashed, things boil and smoke, and out of this energy a new substance emerges.”
For two days the political capital The Hague is transformed into the international city of conflict, with art on interesting locations and a broad range of musicians performing. From the founders of house music in Chicago, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk and Jesse Saunders, to Bomb Squad legend Hank Shocklee, female electronic producer Pursuit Grooves and uncompromising hiphop by Guilty Simpson.
As you might already know, Guilty has a new project with Madlib coming up, you can listen to the first single over here. Almost two years ago I had a little chat with him, mainly about his hometown Detroit, where the financial crisis already kicked in and casino’s took over the centre – providing jobs at the same time. Press play for more, the documentary I mention in the interview is Detroit, Comeback City (from 1998).

You had to wait a while, but here it finally is: the recording of the Rush Hour / Future Vintage instore with the one and only Mayer Hawthorne. On an August summernight in Amsterdam, we gathered at the Rush Hour record store where Mayer did a DJ set to promote his just released album A Strange Arrangement.
With a nice crowd, selector DJ Delay (check his set out here) and a good soundsystem the vibe was already great, but Mayer made it a night to remember. Starting off with some of his new songs and Motown soul, he continued into a small disco/boogie party.
No playlist, but we hope Stevie Wonder, Cherrelle, Alicia Myer, the m***rf**n Gaslamp Killer taking over the mic and Mayer Hawthorne singing live are enough reasons for you to listen to this episode – enjoy!

Through a flyer for a benefit party for Kon (from Kon & Amir, who compiled the legendary On Track mixtape series) I found out last week that Kon has fallen ill and is going in and out of the hospital. Which means he can’t DJ, which means he has no income. So Spinna, Amir and other friends organised a fundraiser – read more about it on Kon’s personal blog Playin4Keeps.
A few years ago I met Kon in Amsterdam for an interview and really loved the disco set he played later that night in Bitterzoet. He and Amir were joking about each others music taste: the more introvert Amir exploring European rare jazz, while Kon was diggin’ for that special boogie record. On his blog you can download the most recent set he did, that contains artists like Gary Davis, Roy Ayers and Shalamar, plus a lot of Kon’s personal edits. Download + playlisthere.
“I was fortunate to have grown up in a time when this sound, this music, was new, and there’s a lot of memories connected to this music” - we hope you get well soon Kon, all the best.

Recently we played quite a few songs from Nite Jewel – the artist name of May Ramona Gonzalez, who released her self-produced album Good Evening earlier this year. The songs of Nite Jewel sound melancholic yet strong, and overall feel like they were made in a small bedroom. “I was just recording on that 8-track because I’m not very good with computers”, Ramona Gonzalez explains in this interview on her recording techniqe and background as an art student in Los Angeles. Together with bandmember Emily Jane, Ramona is touring through Europe this month. She’ll visit Studio 80 in Amsterdam on September 18th 16th, see her further schedule on myspace. I’m wondering what her live show would be like, it seems worth to investigate. PS: Together with Viral Radio we’re looking for a new studio in Amsterdam, and almost found one. We’ll let you know as soon as things are confirmed.
