Future Vintage is a radioshow dedicated to discovering both the history and the future of soul, funk, jazz, hiphop and house music. The show is presented by Melodee & Radna, together with various guest DJ's. Future Vintage broadcasts every two weeks in collaboration with Dutch public network VPRO 3voor12. On FutureVintage.net you'll find the best shows from our archive, new podcasts and news & views about the music we like to share with you.
With more and more music being always available, it’s sometimes hard to choose. Online audio services give you endless possibilities of discovering music, but where to start? A weekly radioshow might help (yes, we’ll be back next month!) but I’d also like to recommend 22tracks.
This platform is developed by my former Lijn5 colleague, Venz. He wanted to keep it simple, and make a starting point for people who are interested in different styles of music. And so he asked music professionals (DJ’s, producers, journalists) to select 22tracks in their favourite genre.
Since Job de Wit got his hands on a hard to find LCD Soundsystem track, Pitchfork featured 22tracks on their homepage, and the rest is history. 22tracks is on the rise, even the director of the Muziekgebouw, Concert Hall of the 21st Century, got involved – check out his contemporary selection. Or go for techno by Tom Trago, soul by FS Green & Full Crate, and don’t forget Job’s pop section if you’d still like to cross boundaries.
Isn’t this the best piece of art on the FutureVintage blog ever? Thank you Mamiko for vogueing up this picture. If you look behind the evil eye and lipstick, it’s actually Mamiko Motto & me standing in front of the Volkskrant gebouw in Amsterdam, on a warm summernight in August. We just got finished recording Hepcat Radio 011, that’s now finally online. I was very honoured when Mamiko asked me to select the music for this episode, since the Hepcat Radio series featured guests like Hudson Mohawke, Dorian Concept and Aardvarck. But actually one of my favourites is HCR05 with Gerry O’Rourke and Nick Lawrence – make sure to get the podcast at Bitmap.TV
Mamiko Motto was our guest DJ at some classic Future Vintage episodes and also was a big inspiration for me to continue with radio, mainly because she’s so passionate about it. Now she moved to London, she’s truly missed in Amsterdam, but her future is shining brighter than ever. It’s funny to hear us talk about Museum Night (in the looong interview at the end) and now knowing Mamiko will compile a soundtrack for the opening. Let’s listen to some music:

So this blog is a bit more lowprofile lately, since we were all quite busy and didn’t really knew where the future would bring us. But while Melodee stayed with The Fly Force in South Africa, Boye was working on new Kindred Spirits releases and I prepared the Amsterdam museumnight – we got some exciting news. Yes, we found a new studio, and a new station, so we definitely will be back with new Future Vintage radio shows this year! Next week we’ll give you a proper update on how and when we will get back on the airwaves (or podcasts, does it really matter these days?).
For now this is still the place to get your weekly dose of the new, the old, the wonky and the funky stuff. While writing I’m listening to a podcast by DJ Spinna, who did a great tribute to Paradise Garage legend Larry Levan. Also Spinna wrote a nice piece where he reflects on being a DJ. When people ask what kind of music we play, it’s sometimes hard to describe. Spinna simply says: “Discriminating against musical genres is something I consider intolerant”. Please visit his podomatic website to read more and listen to his podcasts.
Oh, thanks for all the comments on the Mayer Hawthorne episode. Want to know what it looked like? Watch the video.
The Strange Fruit crew from Rotterdam is known for hosting intimate parties, with often a nice crowd of sweaty dancers. After inviting artists like Benji B, Little Dragon and Flying Lotus earlier this year, this time star of the night will be DâmFunk. On the 10th of October he’ll be playing at Club zonder Consessies, as part of his European ‘Toeachizown’ tour. If you’re on Twitter, you really should follow Dâm, so you get updates about the set he did at the Guggenheim Museum and songs for download such as Afterglow Stroll.
To get in the mood for upcoming saturday, MRP & Nilez from Moovmnt made a ‘Damn…Funk?!’ mix – download and stream right here.
