22tracks on the rise

By Radna · October 26th, 2009, 22:50 · Things We Like

SELECTORWith more and more music being always available, it’s sometimes hard to choose. Online audio services give you endless possibilities of discovering music, but where to start? A weekly radioshow might help (yes, we’ll be back next month!) but I’d also like to recommend 22tracks.

This platform is developed by my former Lijn5 colleague, Venz. He wanted to keep it simple, and make a starting point for people who are interested in different styles of music. And so he asked music professionals (DJ’s, producers, journalists) to select 22tracks in their favourite genre.

Since Job de Wit got his hands on a hard to find LCD Soundsystem track, Pitchfork featured 22tracks on their homepage, and the rest is history. 22tracks is on the rise, even the director of the Muziekgebouw, Concert Hall of the 21st Century, got involved – check out his contemporary selection. Or go for techno by Tom Trago, soul by FS Green & Full Crate, and don’t forget Job’s pop section if you’d still like to cross boundaries.

Hepcat Radio 11 by Mamiko & Radna

mamiko en radna

Isn’t this the best piece of art on the FutureVintage blog ever? Thank you Mamiko for vogueing up this picture. If you look behind the evil eye and lipstick, it’s actually Mamiko Motto & me standing in front of the Volkskrant gebouw in Amsterdam, on a warm summernight in August. We just got finished recording Hepcat Radio 011, that’s now finally online. I was very honoured when Mamiko asked me to select the music for this episode, since the Hepcat Radio series featured guests like Hudson Mohawke, Dorian Concept and Aardvarck. But actually one of my favourites is HCR05 with Gerry O’Rourke and Nick Lawrence – make sure to get the podcast at Bitmap.TV

Mamiko Motto was our guest DJ at some classic Future Vintage episodes and also was a big inspiration for me to continue with radio, mainly because she’s so passionate about it. Now she moved to London, she’s truly missed in Amsterdam, but her future is shining brighter than ever. It’s funny to hear us talk about Museum Night (in the looong interview at the end) and now knowing Mamiko will compile a soundtrack for the opening. Let’s listen to some music:

Bits and Bobs

By Radna · October 8th, 2009, 21:31 · Things We Like

dj spinnaSo this blog is a bit more lowprofile lately, since we were all quite busy and didn’t really knew where the future would bring us. But while Melodee stayed with The Fly Force in South Africa, Boye was working on new Kindred Spirits releases and I prepared the Amsterdam museumnight – we got some exciting news. Yes, we found a new studio, and a new station, so we definitely will be back with new Future Vintage radio shows this year! Next week we’ll give you a proper update on how and when we will get back on the airwaves (or podcasts, does it really matter these days?).

For now this is still the place to get your weekly dose of the new, the old, the wonky and the funky stuff. While writing I’m listening to a podcast by DJ Spinna, who did a great tribute to Paradise Garage legend Larry Levan. Also Spinna wrote a nice piece where he reflects on being a DJ. When people ask what kind of music we play, it’s sometimes hard to describe. Spinna simply says: “Discriminating against musical genres is something I consider intolerant”. Please visit his podomatic website to read more and listen to his podcasts.

Oh, thanks for all the comments on the Mayer Hawthorne episode. Want to know what it looked like? Watch the video.

Dâm Funk is coming to Rotterdam

By Radna · October 4th, 2009, 10:38 · Events

dam_funk-dam_funk_promo_photo_by_mathew_scott2The Strange Fruit crew from Rotterdam is known for hosting intimate parties, with often a nice crowd of sweaty dancers. After inviting artists like Benji B, Little Dragon and Flying Lotus earlier this year, this time star of the night will be Dâm Funk. On the 10th of October he’ll be playing at Club zonder Consessies, as part of his European ‘Toeachizown’  tour. If you’re on Twitter, you really should follow Dâm, so you get updates about the set he did at the Guggenheim Museum and songs for download such as Afterglow Stroll.

To get in the mood for upcoming saturday, MRP & Nilez from Moovmnt made a ‘Damn…Funk?!’ mix – download and stream right here.

A preview of what to expect, Dâm Funk live at Boombox,  Los Angeles:

TodaysArt: Conflict

By Radna · September 23rd, 2009, 14:34 · Events, Interviews

Todays Art 2009With a daring campaign, the upcoming edition of the TodaysArt festival this weekend, focuses on different forms of conflict. “History shows that whenever people face many questions, conflict ensues. Not necessarily violent, but conflict nonetheless. It is like a chemical reaction: energy is unleashed, things boil and smoke, and out of this energy a new substance emerges.”

For two days the political capital The Hague is transformed into the international city of conflict, with art on interesting locations and a broad range of musicians performing. From the founders of house music in Chicago, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk and Jesse Saunders, to Bomb Squad legend Hank Shocklee, female electronic producer Pursuit Grooves and uncompromising hiphop by Guilty Simpson.

As you might already know, Guilty has a new project with Madlib coming up, you can listen to the first single over here. Almost two years ago I had a little chat with him, mainly about his hometown Detroit, where the financial crisis already kicked in and casino’s took over the centre – providing jobs at the same time. Press play for more, the documentary I mention in the interview is  Detroit, Comeback City (from 1998).

For more info on the programme of TodayArt, visit the website. Wether you’re a friend or foe, I hope to see you around in The Hague this weekend.

Show: Get live with Mayer Hawthorne

By Radna · September 17th, 2009, 20:13 · Radio Shows

mayer how do you do2You had to wait a while, but here it finally is: the recording of the Rush Hour / Future Vintage instore with the one and only Mayer Hawthorne. On an August summernight in Amsterdam, we gathered at the Rush Hour record store where Mayer did a DJ set to promote his just released album A Strange Arrangement.

With a nice crowd, selector DJ Delay (check his set out here) and a good soundsystem the vibe was already great, but Mayer made it a night to remember. Starting off with some of his new songs and Motown soul, he continued into a small disco/boogie party.

No playlist, but we hope Stevie Wonder, Cherrelle, Alicia Myer, the m***rf**n Gaslamp Killer taking over the mic and Mayer Hawthorne singing live are enough reasons for you to listen to this episode – enjoy!

Get well Kon

By Radna · September 14th, 2009, 23:56 · Things We Like

fundraiser kon3Through a flyer for a benefit party for Kon (from Kon & Amir, who compiled the legendary On Track mixtape series) I found out last week that Kon has fallen ill and is going in and out of the hospital. Which means he can’t DJ, which means he has no income. So Spinna, Amir and other friends organised a fundraiser – read more about it on Kon’s personal blog Playin4Keeps.

A few years ago I met Kon in Amsterdam for an interview and really loved the disco set he played later that night in Bitterzoet. He and Amir were joking about each others music taste: the more introvert Amir exploring European rare jazz, while Kon was diggin’ for that special boogie record. On his blog you can download the most recent set he did, that contains artists like Gary Davis, Roy Ayers and Shalamar, plus a lot of Kon’s personal edits. Download + playlist here.

“I was fortunate to have grown up in a time when this sound, this music, was new, and there’s a lot of memories connected to this music” - we hope you get well soon Kon, all the best.

Nite Jewel is on tour

By Radna · September 3rd, 2009, 22:54 · Things We Like

good_evening

Recently we played quite a few songs from Nite Jewel – the artist name of May Ramona Gonzalez, who released her self-produced album Good Evening earlier this year. The songs of Nite Jewel sound melancholic yet strong, and overall feel like they were made in a small bedroom. “I was just recording on that 8-track because I’m not very good with computers”, Ramona Gonzalez explains in this interview on her recording techniqe and background as an art student in Los Angeles. Together with bandmember Emily Jane, Ramona is touring through Europe this month. She’ll visit Studio 80 in Amsterdam on September 18th 16th, see her further schedule on myspace. I’m wondering what her live show would be like, it seems worth to investigate. PS: Together with Viral Radio we’re looking for a new studio in Amsterdam, and almost found one. We’ll let you know as soon as things are confirmed.
