Future Vintage is a radioshow dedicated to discovering the history and future of soul, jazz, hiphop, electronic & psychedelic music, with no boundaries. It’s presented by Radna, Reinier and various guest DJ’s. We broadcast every Tuesday from 8-9PM on Red Light Radio, live from the Amsterdam red light district.
In 2007 Future Vintage was founded by Melodee, Radna, Tom Trago & KC the Funkaholic. Over here you’ll find the best shows from our extensive archive, new podcasts and news & views about the music we like to share with you.
"They play nothing that you would hear on the radio, but everything you’d rather hear on the radio." – Inquiringmind Magazine
We were a bit on the downlow the last few days, but here’s show number 10. Have to excuse for the dusty sound (we did our best to recover it), but we hope you love the selection of songs. With new and old funk in the first hour, raspy singing by D’Angelo and Gonjasufi, a certain song we weren’t allowed to play, and a special guest DJ in the second hour. Jorn Konijn has been a regular Future Vintage listener since the beginning, and is also a collector of Brasilian, African and Indian music. He’s quite a traveller, and because we look so much forward to some warmer temperatures, he takes us on a one hour world journey in the 2nd hour. From the catchy sounds of Ghana to Indian wedding music, come aboard and listen.

This Thursday, March 18th, I’m organising the first edition of Seeing Sounds, a film night about music culture at de Verdieping (Trouw). Every month Seeing Sounds will present a movie or documentary that has a strong connection with a certain part of music history, and there will be a DJ playing a set inspired by the film.
On the first edition you can see Downtown 81, a movie that captures the do-it-yourself vibe of downtown New York in the eighties. In the abonded buildings of the Lower East Side art and music came together, and in the film you’ll hear and see both early hiphop as no wave bands such as James White and the Blacks. The main character is Jean-Michel Basquiat, who’s then 19 years old. Later he would become -under the wings of Andy Warhol- the first Afro American artist of international fame, but in ‘81 Basquiat was still making his art on the street. Downtown 81 is one of my favourite movies ever, mainly because it captures the spirit of making something out of nothing, and gives a unique view on New York nightlife. Before and after, DJ Strange Boutique aka My Little Underground will play a set inspired by the film. Hope to see you there!
20.00 – 00.00 (start film 21.00) / de Verdieping / Wibaustraat 127 / Free Entrance / more info
You don’t have to wait for 2 weeks, here’s another Future Vintage. Just before Melodee left to South by Southwest, we had lots of fun recording this show, with Reinier selecting a blend of old and new music in the first hour, and Mark Cremins playing in the second. Mark is part of the Rush Hourfamily, but also the man behind Conky records and many lovely events in Amsterdam, such as the Pop/Wave party where James Pants recently played. If you’re reading this on monday: tonight Mark is playing at Cafe Belgique, where Freschard is performing at 9PM. It was quite an eclectic show, just like we love, check the playlist, and tune in!

Melodee is back from holiday, and also 2 of our favourite DJ’s are making a comeback. In the first hour Boye (Kindred Spirits) plays a selection of jazz, soul, B52’s and Theo Parrish, and in the second hour DJ Lefto (Studio Brussel / Gilles Peterson Worldwide) gives an update on what’s happening in Brussels and plays exclusives by Flying Lotus, Mayer Hawthorne and many others. Also make sure to check out Lefto’s own radioshow, that he’s doing for 11 years already. PS: Here’s Dimlite live on Viral Radio playing his remake of Diana in the autumn wind.

Despite the great amount of podcasts nowadays, I sometimes do miss the experience of live radio. Not out of nostalgia, but mainly for that feeling of live broadcasting, of knowing that something is happening in the now – and you’re not able to skip. Recently live radio makes a comeback trough ustream. “You’re On”, it says, and that’s exactly what the website does: making it very ease to broadcast live.
There’s a lot of crappy webcam talkshows, but there are some great radio gems to find. My favourite ustream moment thusfar was the night when Mamiko was broadcasting live from London with James Pants and Hudson Mohawke, while Ras G, Lukid, Lorn and people from all over the world were listening and commenting in the chatbox – live.
All these shows are London based by the way. If you enjoy this, also take a look and sign the petition to save legendary London club Plastic People from closing. It’s a homebase for the music scene there, so please show support.
