Seeing Sounds #2: Detroit, Techno City

By Radna · April 21st, 2010, 8:36 · Things We Like

After the first edition of Seeing Sounds about the no-wave scene in Downtown New York, #2 is again about a city in crisis, that plays an essential role in recent music history. Detroit, the city of Motown soul and the automobile industry, is also known as the birthplace of techno music. Two short VPRO documentaries are screened: Kraftwerk & Detroit Techno and Detroit, Comeback City, while DJ Darco Cezveciyan plays music by pioneers of the techno movement. Also William de Bruijn, director of Detroit, Comeback City (1998) will be present to talk about the relation between the economics and architecture of Detroit and the music that originated there. “A complete mistake…like George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator, with only a sequencer to keep them company.” We’re going underground this time, so I hope to see you in de Verdieping tomorrow, the space below club Trouw Amsterdam.

To get in the mood, here’s a playlist of Detroit techno compiled by Underground Resistance. And some essential reading, 3 great interviews with techno’s founding fathers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. More info on Facebook and Twitter. PS: If you’re into this, you also don’t want to miss Disco3000 in Trouw this saturday, with Urban Tribe live, featuring Moodymann aka Kenny Dixon Jr, Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir & DJ Stingray – all from the D.
