Seeing Sounds of Sun Ra

Pssst, just a little heads up about Seeing Sounds this thursday, since I think Future Vintage listeners will like this one especially. Seeing Sounds #4 is dedicated to the music and ideas of legendary jazz composer Sun Ra. Born on Saturn and known for his cosmic philosophy, the mythical Sun Ra touched the entire history of jazz, from swing music to electronic experiments. His film Space is the Place (1974) is an entertaining mix of blaxploitation, afro-futurism and avant-garde jazz, where Sun Ra saves Afro-Americans by transporting them outerspace through music. Max Cole, who in the past interviewed bandmembers of Sun Ra’s Intergalactic Myth-Science Solar Arkestra, gives an introduction and plays a selection of Sun Ra’s extensive music catalog.

“I’m here on the planet, you might say, for a mission. That means that I have to be careful what musicians I use.” – Sun Ra

“Black power and free jazz collided with the fashion sense of Superfly” – New York Times

Listen to this Sun Ra mix by Max Cole and 1.1. (DOWNLOAD here) check the program on Facebook, see the video, and come along!
