• Future Vintage

Future Vintage is a radioshow dedicated to discovering the history and future of soul, jazz, hiphop, electronic & psychedelic music, with no boundaries. It’s presented by Radna, Reinier and various guest DJ’s. We broadcast every Tuesday from 8-9PM on Red Light Radio, live from the Amsterdam red light district.

In 2007 Future Vintage was founded by Melodee, Radna, Tom Trago & KC the Funkaholic. Over here you’ll find the best shows from our extensive archive, new podcasts and news & views about the music we like to share with you.

Back again

By Reinier · June 26th, 2011, 22:49 · Special post

Oh oh, we’re slacking again aren’t we? But I’m getting it all back on track again. A few weeks worth of shows are now neatly listened beneath again, enjoy.

The last weeks we’re a bit chaotic, but inspiring. It felt like we fought the Dutch art cuts and played at the International Radio Festival in Zurich at the same time, which we did, kind of.

The news has probably reached you somehow, and as I write this Radna is in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, at the kick off of a big demonstration against the Dutch cuts on art funding. Cuts on funding may be necessary, but it feels a bit like a wrong message is sent with these cuts on art funding. Almost as if people working in culture are lazy, and profiting inappropriately from governmental support. With Future Vintage we experienced quite the opposite, and haven’t ever seen people working so hard for a thing they’d love to share with others. Like Viral Radio taking the risk of booking artists like Flying Lotus, Mike Slott, Hudson Mohawke, Ras G and many more at the beginning of their carreer in the unique classic jazz setting of the Bimhuis.

Or Hugo and Orpheu of Red Light Radio, who luckily saw their private investments and free time in the studio rewarded with an endorsement by Voordekunst. This resulted in a lot of money raised by you and other listeners of Red Light Radio to keep us on air for another year, and maybe even beyond. We won’t forget the Van Gogh Museum, the NAi, Foam and Museum ‘t Dolhuys either, museums who all programmed off the beaten track and gave us the chance to meet new and old listeners in another environment than the usual club/studio setting.

Meanwhile in Zürich -at the International Radio Festival- we had a lot of fun. Fresh (not so) of the night train we did two hours, and Hugo and Orpheu did one hour with the best Red Light Radio moments. After that, we tasted the especially designed Red Light cocktail (energy drink and red Martini…) went to a lovely dj gig of Urgent FM’s Gerd De Wilde, and lost Orpheu in a complicated taxi thing afterwards. Good times. Hope these shows will be online soon, and we’ll share these as soon as we have them. Promised.

FV 040 – Brussels owning the dance

By Radna · June 26th, 2011, 22:49 · Radio Shows

While Reinier is uploading all the shows of the past weeks, I present you the latest one. The after-Zurich verion that is, with a Belgium & ginger twist. For a while we’ve been in touch with Alex Deforce from the record label (formerly known as blog) On Point, but this was actually the first time he visited Future Vintage. Together with Jazz Neversleeps, who did some great productions recently and suprised us with the test pressing of his new 12″. Also the Ginger Prince was back, playing Belgium wave and disco things. Together with unhearable jokes this all ended in a chaos, but still the set by the On Point Soundsystem was supertight. The good news: they’ll come back every month at Red Light Radio for a 2 hour show!

FV 039 – Wheel me Out w/ Lavendersss

By Reinier · June 26th, 2011, 22:46 · Interviews, Radio Shows

Before we even got to the International Radio Festival, we already hooked up with a radio maker who went there. Dublab’s Lavendersss just left Zürich and had a few days in Amsterdam before traveling further on his European trip. It was great he had a little time to pass by Red Light Radio, and he did a little LA flavoured set from his iPhone and a cd he had with him, which turned out to be a very nice selection.

Stay tuned the coming weeks, as we try to bring you some other selectors with a different scope, while I am on a brief vacation.

FV 038 – Dirty Beauty

By Reinier · June 26th, 2011, 22:45 · Radio Shows

A few weeks later, we now refer to this show as the one we dropped The Smiths in. Maybe the most eclectic move we ever did, it wasn’t planned as you might notice. Sometimes those things happen, and it brought the show to a quite interesting ending, playing Mobb Deep embedded in some Hype Williams sounded quite good if I might say. The rest of the show has a certain powerful soul vibe. Sa-Ra’s Dirty Beauty, followed by Tyler’s beautiful dirt in She. Then more up tempo Detroit stuff, but stil in touch with the soul. Here you go:

FV 037 – Bicentennial Blues

By Radna · June 13th, 2011, 16:02 · Radio Shows

Yes, we are late with the blog. But if you want to be the first to hear, you can always listen live on Tuesday 8-9 CET on Red Light Radio, or check their souncloud the day after. Still, we like this spot.

Thanks to everyone who made a donation to keep the station on air, we made it! So that means we’ll definitely broadcast for another year at the studio in the Red Light District, and there’s more events and journeys to come. Such as our trip to the International Radio Festival in Zurich this weekend, where we’ll do a 2 hour live show.

But for now, you probably wondered what we did the last two weeks. Well here’s show 037, with some extra Gil Scott Heron, and money making music that got us in the mood for the benefit party.
