The Strange Fruit crew from Rotterdam is known for hosting intimate parties, with often a nice crowd of sweaty dancers. After inviting artists like Benji B, Little Dragon and Flying Lotus earlier this year, this time star of the night will be Dâm Funk. On the 10th of October he’ll be playing at Club zonder Consessies, as part of his European ‘Toeachizown’  tour. If you’re on Twitter, you really should follow Dâm, so you get updates about the set he did at the Guggenheim Museum and songs for download such as Afterglow Stroll.

With a daring campaign, the upcoming edition of the TodaysArt festival this weekend, focuses on different forms of conflict. “History shows that whenever people face many questions, conflict ensues. Not necessarily violent, but conflict nonetheless. It is like a chemical reaction: energy is unleashed, things boil and smoke, and out of this energy a new substance emerges.”

For two days the political capital The Hague is transformed into the international city of conflict, with art on interesting locations and a broad range of musicians performing. From the founders of house music in Chicago, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk and Jesse Saunders, to Bomb Squad legend Hank Shocklee, female electronic producer Pursuit Grooves and uncompromising hiphop by Guilty Simpson.

As you might already know, Guilty has a new project with Madlib coming up, you can listen to the first single over here. Almost two years ago I had a little chat with him, mainly about his hometown Detroit, where the financial crisis already kicked in and casino’s took over the centre – providing jobs at the same time. We’ve played his music and interviewed him before, but now we’re actually going to record a Future Vintage episode with Stones Throw newest soul artist Mayer Hawthorne. And you can be there. After the first Rush Hour instore we recorded with Dorian Concept and Harmonic 313, Future Vintage will host another instore at our favourite recordshop on august 20th.

This time no futuristic beats, but dusty soul 45’s. Mayer is not going to perform, but brings you, ‘just a DJ set’. And if you listened to the podcasts Mr. Hawthorne did before, you know that’s a must hear. A second soul connaisseur will also play his favourite tunes: DJ Delay from Waxwell Records will present you a  preview of Dutch Flowers – a compilation with Dutch soul, funk and disco that’s in the making.

In the upcoming days there are quite some events looking for the perfect beat. This friday the Amsterdam-London connection will be in full effect during the Beatdimensions releaseparty in Plastic People (London). Cinnaman, who compiled the groundbreaking Beatdimensions compilation in 2007 now proudly presents a Volume 2. He plays alongside Danny Breaks, Mamiko Motto and Nwachukwu.

Next week, I hope our bedroomproducers’ favourite bedroomproducers will drop by at the second edition of the CD-R night at de Verdieping/ Trouw on august 7th. Here you can meet other musicians and share new music over a proper soundsystem. Simply burn a  CD-R, then entrance is free & you even might bump into Aardvarck, Cinnaman or Mala (who plays at the Viral Radio party after).

And that’s not all. On august 8th we can all head to Rooms of Redbull (Amsterdam) for a Beatbattle organised by Nalden and Moovmnt. The line-up looks promising, with producers like Dyno, I.N.T, FS Green and Jay Bordeaux. If you want to compete for 500  euros worth of prize money, see more info here. Flying Lotus at a crowded Viral Radio event in Trouw last spring

In our festival special from this week (see post below), there was one we actually missed – and deserves some extra attention now. The Viral Radio Festival next week is initiated by Juha and Cinnaman, who also present the bimonthly Viral Radio(show) on 3voor12, and is focused on experimental electronic music, beats & beyond. Due to a lack of time, here some more about the festival, quoted from Ju himself: “After the first edition in June 2008, that took place on one night at the Bimhuis and 11, we have grown to three venues in three nights. On Wednesday1 July we will have a CD-R night with Hudson Mohawke, Cinnaman, Icarus and Gavin and Tony from London. Bring your own beats and get feedback from the pros. On Thursday we will have Icarus, Furt and Mamiko Motto at the wonderful Bimhuis. And on Friday, the grand finale of the festival will take place with Daedelus, Hudson Mohawke, Bullion, the Blessings, and Juha & Cinnaman.” That’s quite a line-up, so be sure to visit these three special venues in Amsterdam. Benny Sings die vanachter de vleugel en met Aardvarck optreedt, KC the Funkaholic die starry night plaatjes draait, cocktails drinken, rondleidingen langs werelberoemde schilderijen die Van Gogh van de nacht maakte, videokunst over  nachtelijk Amsterdam  – dat en meer vindt plaats tijdens de nachtsalon, deze vrijdagavond in het Van Gogh Museum.
Van 20.00 – 00.00 brengen verschillende artiesten een ode aan de nacht, zie hier het volledige programma. Kaartjes zijn te koop bij Rush Hour, vangoghmuseumtickets/nachsalon of vrijdag aan de deur. Maar om de rij te skippen is voorverkoop wel zo handig. Om middernacht kun je door naar Paradiso, waar dan in de kelder KC’s Boogie Bash begint met dansbare disco/soul/boogie muziek.

Eigenlijk had ik dit al eerder willen aankondigen, maar aangezien ik vroeg wakker ben en je nog tot 11 uur kunt aanmelden voor de Red Bull Music Academy Taster vandaag, zeg ik het alsnog: vandaag organiseert RMBA een taster in Amsterdam, met lectures door Tony Allen en Jazzanova. En dat is gratis (inlcusief eten en drinken) voor de eerste 50 gelukkigen. Dus spoedt je naar de Oudezijds Achterburgwal 24 om hier aan mee te doen.

Als je geen early bird bent, maar toch de legendarische afrobeat drummer Tony Allen wilt zien optreden, dan kan dat morgen 10 mei in Trouw. Jazzanova begint om 21.00 met een DJ set en Tony Allen treedt vervolgens op met een Amsterdamse surprise act.

Ook aanbevolen; de website van RMBA, waar je de lectures van voorgaande jaren terug kunt bekijken, er is inmiddels een indrukwekkend archief opgebouwd met o.a ?uestlove, Arthur Verocai en Theo Parrish.

Deze donderdag viert Future Vintage pioneer Tom Trago de release van zijn album Voyage Direct. Het is een plaat vol meeslepende sexy house (met disco en techno invloeden) waar we al eerder over schreven en inmiddels ook Laurent Garnier lovende woorden voor heeft: “proper beauty proper disco-techno album. At last someone that knows what disco music is all about …..This is simply brilliant”

Voyage Direct vraagt om de juiste industriele setting die er gelukkig sinds enkele weken is, de release zal namelijk plaatsvinden in Amsterdams nieuwste aanwinst Trouw. Ik was er afgelopen vrijdag nog bij De Verdieping, waar je nu een toffe architectuur expo kunt zien. Maar toen ik even boven keek zag ik een club met goed geluid, veel beton en precies genoeg licht. Wees erbij dus, want Tom brengt ook nog eens Trus ‘Me uit Manchester mee, bekend van het album Working Nights maar bovenal een DJ en discoliefhebber. Terwijl de opnames van de Future Vintage instore nog even op zich laten wachten, graag je aandacht voor twee kleinschalige maar bijzondere avonden de komende tijd in Amsterdam. Allereerst is er deze vrijdag de nachtsalon, georganiseert door de n8 (aka ondergetekende) in ARCAM. De nachtsalon duikt een paar keer per jaar in een Amsterdams museum op, en deze keer is dat het Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam. Thema van de avond is conrete & jungle en hoe steden van de toekomst groen gebouwd kunnen worden. Het hele programma leg ik hier nog eens uit, maar met de muzikale omlijsting van Mamiko’ Motto & Neil Newbud + een documentaire over Detroit zal het ook voor Future Vintage luisteraars de moeite waard zijn. Spoed je naar Rush Hour voor een kaartje in de voorverkoop, want het gaat redelijk snel en de capaciteit is beperkt.

Volgende week blijkt het alweer tijd te zijn voor een van de leukse feestjes van de stad – wellicht niet bij iedereen bekend, maar alleen al legendarisch omdat James Pants er zijn allereerste optreden deed: More Tea, Vicar?/ Cafe Pig. In de Occii zullen op zondag 29 maart Aardvarck en de More Tea DJ’s de krachten bundelen, met daarnaast twee optredens. Namelijk het Canadese Nadja, als in rock die ’sometimes lush, sometimes violent’ klinkt en Paul White uit Londen. “Paul’s making beats that are really on the More Tea tip…psychadelic, heavy, way out, funny and rather charming. He’s brilliant. Come and check out his music.” – aldus de website.

Komend weekend zijn er enkele uitgesproken producers in Amsterdam. Zo treedt Dorian Concept vrijdag op in het Bimhuis (samen met Knalpot en Rednose Distrikt afterparty) en viert zaterdag Harmonic 313 zijn albumrelease samen met The Bug (UK) en Cinnaman in de OT301. Dorian heeft zijn debuutalbum op Kindred Spirits ‘When Planets Explode’ genoemd, terwijl Harmonic 313 gaat voor ‘When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence’. Alles valt samen op zaterdag 18.00 uur. Dan start in onze favoriete platenwinkel Rush Hour namelijk de eerste Future Vintage Radio instore.

Harmonic 313 doet een DJ-set van 31.3 minuten en Dorian Concept volgt met een kleine live sessie. Future Vintage neemt alles live op (ikzelf ben jammergenoeg niet in het land maar Miss Melodee is wel van de partij) zodat je het later nog eens terug kunt luisteren. En: Cinnaman is daar om je van de laatste ontwikkelingen op beat en dub-step gebied te voorzien.
