FV 085 – After Queensday

By Radna · May 2nd, 2012, 21:14 · Radio Shows

The day after Queensday, is often the day of a big hangover. This year it wasn’t so heavy though. Because of my flu I decided to skip the parties, and only go for the flea market. And some of our 1 euro vinyl finds you’ll hear in this show. Post Queensday, meant also post Mannheim. Playing, hanging out and drinking lots of tea over there made us pretty relaxed. I could post a picture of a Chinese teahouse for this show, or a park, or some orange, but decided to go for Reinier checking out a ruin in Heidelberg.

So what was your favourite Queensday find? For me it was Peven Everett (the last song of this show) and some old school Armani jeans. Enjoy the sunny weather with this one:

FV 084 – Spring

By Reinier · May 2nd, 2012, 16:16 · Radio Shows

Just after this show, we left for Mannheim, hence this late update. Last week the forecasts of good weather came dripping in. First for Mannheim (which we couldn’t believe, but became reality with 25 degrees celsius on Saturday) and later for Monday (Queensday, a Dutch national holiday very dependent on good weather because of it’s huge flee markets and lots of outdoor parties).

It sounded too good to be true, but it made us already feel like playing rumba, Brazillian and mainly positive stuff this show. More on Queensday in the next post. Have fun listening.

FV 083 – Booming & Zooming

By Reinier · April 23rd, 2012, 11:32 · Radio Shows

Ballads are always quite heavy, but rewinding your ballad halfway is next level. This rewind marks the end of the first half of the show, which mostly consisted of slow and spacy stuff.

Time to get ready for Big Business, Why sampling Tribe Called Quest, new Moodymann and choppy Daedalus. Enjoy.

PS: If you’re near Mannheim this Thursday or Saturday, come by! We’ll be playing in a bar and a cinema.

By Radna · April 15th, 2012, 21:10 · Radio Shows

It’s already a few weeks ago, but I still remember we really liked doing this show. I was in a happy mood because I just discovered Kid Creole’s first album, and then some John Cooper Clarke from the crates of Reinier can never go wrong.

I promised to link the Beautiful Swimmer tribute mix with more music by Don Cherry, so you can find it here. But please first have a listen to the show below!

FV 080 – Toughen Up

By Reinier · April 3rd, 2012, 10:44 · Radio Shows

Since Radna was on a holiday I fell a bit back on things I have been playing out lately, which turns out to become a mix of very slow house and electronic music with new rap and RnB. Curious where this will head to, and because of this I was very happy to hear the new Uku Kuut album, BJ the Chicago Kid and Erykah Badu with Tony Allen, Damon Albarn and Flea on Manuela. Enjoy.

FV 079 – Man in Paris

By Reinier · March 27th, 2012, 15:15 · Radio Shows

Glad to hear Cody Chesnutt again, in what sounds like a recording from a hotel room in Paris. Check his soundcloud for more.

This time we also had Mirelva over, a long time listener and she has been in the background of several recordings, it was cool she shared some music this time. Like a 1-O.A.K. track, a screwed Diplo tune and more. There’s also a screwed Erykah Badu song, and a skipping needle, which we discovered quite late, because it somehow sounds natural in the record we played.

FV 078 – 7 Souls

By Reinier · March 16th, 2012, 12:57 · Radio Shows

I hardly buy any 45’s anymore. I used to, and should do it more often. Since Radna was a bit feverish and stayed home, I decided to bring them along with some more music that I kind of forgot about. Like Company Flow, Bounty Killer, Material, and the Sa-Ra produced No More by J*Davey.

Also added some new sounds that are definitely ’now’ but will maybe still have to stand the test of time.

Special Show: Red Light Radio @ 5 Days Off Basement Session

By Reinier · March 16th, 2012, 12:57 · Radio Shows, Special post

For the last day of 5 Days Off (a major dance and electronic music festival in Amsterdam), Red Light Radio asked us to host the basement of Paradiso. In these 5 late night hours we decided to explore the future and vintage surrounding the line up of 5 Days Off together with local heroes and underground players from Amsterdam.

Have a listen to sets by Shane Burmania, Juha, Breakfast of Champions, Deluge, and Mark from Middlesex. Playing roughly (in the same order) contemporary and avant garde music, future Vrieshuis (Amerika), 80’s & 80’s baby’s, the newest beats, soul & jazz, and electronic stuff from all over the place.

There are a couple of technical difficulties here and there and there’s not a lot of talking, but all music is really nice, and we had a good time doing this. Some track lists are below.

Enjoy!

FV 077 – The Genesis

By Radna · March 7th, 2012, 22:37 · Radio Shows

Last week I bumped into this video of Joey Bada$$. He’s 17 years old, and he sounds like how hiphop sounded the year he was born. The new waves in hiphop music are pretty interesting lately, and probably a lot of 30+ people can suddenly relate again to the music of the new generation. Maybe this generation is partly inspired by the music their parents listened to…not only soul or funk or reggae, but also hiphop music from back in the days.

For years I didn’t even look at the hiphop section in my record closet anymore. I’ve simply listened to it too much, and considered it too nostalgic. But slowly I’ve gotten interested again, and Raekwon’s Icecream became a standard in my DJ sets. It was lots of fun yesterday to try to do a strictly hiphop radio show. Combine a young Nas with Joey, or MF Doom with Hodgy Beats. Reinier was on holiday – but I think there will be a part 2 when he’s back another time. Enjoy!

FV 076 – Sunset Strip

By Reinier · March 5th, 2012, 23:29 · Radio Shows

There are a couple of things in this show I (and I think Radna too) like a lot, very sweet latin influenced soul is one, hardcore reggae rewinds are another. Somewhere in between: super how a Hodgy Beats track was the first OFWGKTA song we played (I think it was early 2011). Now in early 2012 he dropped a solo ep with a very nice Flying Lotus production, in this show too. The comeback of The Time was a nice tip we got in through e-mail, we played Cadillac. And Radna came up with AlunaGeorge, I think everyone who heard this song once, plays it another time.
