u stream, we stream

By Radna · March 3rd, 2010, 0:56 · Things We Like

Despite the great amount of podcasts nowadays, I sometimes do miss the experience of live radio. Not out of nostalgia, but mainly for that feeling of live broadcasting, of knowing that something is happening in the now – and you’re not able to skip. Recently live radio makes a comeback trough ustream. “You’re On”, it says, and that’s exactly what the website does: making it very ease to broadcast live.

There’s a lot of crappy webcam talkshows, but there are some great radio gems to find. My favourite ustream moment thusfar was the night when Mamiko was broadcasting live from London with James Pants and Hudson Mohawke, while Ras G, Lukid, Lorn and people from all over the world were listening and commenting in the chatbox – live.

Some recommendations, got more? Please comment.

Mondaynight: Lukid

Tuesdaynight: Office Jam

Wednesdaynight: Hepcat Radio (10PM CET)

All these shows are London based by the way. If you enjoy this, also take a look and sign the petition to save legendary London club Plastic People from closing. It’s a homebase for the music scene there, so please show support.

Aardvarck – Tribute to John Coltrane

By Radna · February 24th, 2010, 22:49 · Things We Like

When exploring unknown territory of music, a DJ mix is often a good starting point. For me, jazz is still a bit distant and abstract (although I do have some jazz records, go to concerts and am in the middle of reading Sun Ra’s biography). It might change, also because Aardvarck just payed tribute to John Coltrane by sharing a one hour selection on RMBA Radio.

His choice for John Coltrane is maybe a surprise for those who know him from his techno and beat related productions, but Aardvarck has an encyclopidiac knowledge of music – and I’m happy he shares that with us. Oh and while your at it, please also check out the classic Sun Ra tribute by Max Cole & 1.1.

The look of love

By Radna · February 12th, 2010, 18:17 · Things We Like

Like every year around February 14th, the web is full of Valentine mixes. Although I still enjoy KC the Funkaholic’s Quiet Storm (which is quite sexy, and quite funny, since both Marvin Gaye and Borat are involved) I also have to recommend the latest podcast by Stones Throw.

It features all the looks of love: the new, the forbidden, the unanswered, the one at first sight and the neverending. Also, the line-up of this mix is amazing: Dam-Funk, J.Rocc, James Pants, Peanut Butter Wolf and Mayer Hawthorne all play 10 minutes of love tracks. Happy Valentine!

On-Point.tv presents Martyn

By Radna · January 22nd, 2010, 11:40 · Things We Like

This is a bit overdue, but I think the video interview with Dutch producer Martyn, made by Alex Deforce of On-Point, deserves some extra attention. For a while now, On-Point.tv presents video’s on artists such as Dam Funk, Trus Me and Jose James. In a recent episode, Alex meets with Martyn in his former hometown, Eindhoven. Martyn, who currently lives in Washington DC, talks about how the Philips history influenced the Eindhoven music scene and how different generations shaped the development of techno, drum ‘n bass and dubstep. Martyn himself is influenced by all of these genres. On March 3th Martyn will play at the 5daysoff festival in Paradiso, together with Four Tet, Floating Points, Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus.

LuckyMe Mixtapes

By Radna · January 6th, 2010, 10:09 · Things We Like

lucky mixtapeThe LuckyMe family from Scotland, home of artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Rustie & Mike Slott, brings music, art and parties the D.I.Y way.  ‘We are here to fuck with genre and sensibility.’ Since 2002 the collective is throwing parties at clubs but also the Glasgow School of Art, where southern hiphop easily blends in with futuristic beats or classic house music.

Now there’s a label, clothing line and also a great collection of mixtapes. The latter is even for free, since you can all download them over here. I really enjoyed the LOVE LOVE mix my friend Mamiko aka Wednesday Nite did recently, and also Dorian Concept added a new mix. With that much quality, I’d recommend to subscribe to the LuckyMe Podcast.

Forever KC the Funkaholic

By Radna · December 17th, 2009, 11:09 · Things We Like

Forever KC 225 years ago, KC the Funkaholic had his first DJ gig. In the years that followed, he saw different music styles come, go, and come back again – but always followed his own taste. A taste that goes above thinking in genres, but is all about selecting the right tracks from the broad spectrum of soul, funk, jazz, house and hiphop music.

KC played basicly everywhere; at the legendary RoXY club, festivals, abroad and Paradiso. But apart from playing music, he’s also the founding father of clubnights like Bassline, Paradisco and Luv Dancin. Plus the Kindred Spirits nights and recordlabel. When it comes to booking artists and giving artists a platform for their first release, he often took risks, simply because he believed in the music.

A few years ago it was KC  who got Melodee, Tom Trago and me together to ask if we would like to do the radioshow that is now Future Vintage. He helped us a lot with the first shows, and his knowledge and amazing record collection are still a big inspiration. Thank you KC!

Let’s celebrate 25 years of sharing music this saturday in Trouw, where KC plays all night long and you can show him some love on the dancefloor. More info here.

hold // box // flat

hold box flatFor bikerides through Amsterdam I’m always looking for nice podcasts. I was pleasantly surprised that the bPm (from the Brownswood crew in London), who listens to Future Vintage but never understands what we’re saying, started a radioshow himself. Together with d’Wala and Martin Kemp.

At the blog holdboxflat you can find 7 different episodes now of transmit // box // flat, that cover a wide range of music. Moody and mysterious, but always with a warm feeling – the kind of things you want to hear when it’s getting dark early in wintertime.

la_radiostudio_bw300From this week, Future Vintage starts recording new radioshows again. It took us a while, but we’re very delighted to have a new studio (this time in Amsterdam) and to collaborate with VPRO 3voor12. We’ll record a new 2 hour show every 2 weeks, that you can stream/download/podcast from this blog as usual, or listen to at the 3voor12 website. Melodee and I will present and select the music, together with various DJ’s. 3voor12 is also the public broadcasting station where our friends from Viral Radio are doing their bi-monthly show – so you’ll have an new Viral Radio or Future Vintage episode every week. Promotors, musicians, producers: please send your new music to info [at] FutureVintage.net. UPDATE: Show goes online monday tuesday.

Also we’re looking forward to recording a show in the NAI, Netherlands Institute for Architecture, in Rotterdam. On December 11th Future Vintage will make a special episode there on sounds of different cities, as part of the Open City exhibition.

Butterstar Galactica

By Radna · November 1st, 2009, 19:18 · Things We Like

I’m nohudson_mohawke_blogt really a gamefarasgnatic, but when its soundtrack is one of the most exciting albums of the year and Whitney Houston is doing the voice-overs, I’m a fan. Yes, I’m talking about Butterstar Galactica, the game that Warp recently launched to celebrate Butter, the debut album of Hudson Mohawke.

This friday Hudson Mohawke has his album release party in Trouw at Viral Radio, where he’s accompanied by Mamiko Motto’ and Ras G, and ofcourse Juha and Cinnaman. The day after, on the 7th of November, Mamiko will also provide the soundtrack for the opening of Museum Night (n8), which involves a lightprojection on the courtyard of the Hermitage museum in Amsterdam. With 42 locations (from the Planetarium to the Olympic Stadium, and from the Pianola Museum to the Van Gogh Museum), there’s a lot happening, so please visit the website for more info. For now I’ll leave you with Cosmic Tones 4 Mental Therapy Vol. 1 by Ras G (featured on Dublab before):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

22tracks on the rise

By Radna · October 26th, 2009, 22:50 · Things We Like

SELECTORWith more and more music being always available, it’s sometimes hard to choose. Online audio services give you endless possibilities of discovering music, but where to start? A weekly radioshow might help (yes, we’ll be back next month!) but I’d also like to recommend 22tracks.

This platform is developed by my former Lijn5 colleague, Venz. He wanted to keep it simple, and make a starting point for people who are interested in different styles of music. And so he asked music professionals (DJ’s, producers, journalists) to select 22tracks in their favourite genre.

Since Job de Wit got his hands on a hard to find LCD Soundsystem track, Pitchfork featured 22tracks on their homepage, and the rest is history. 22tracks is on the rise, even the director of the Muziekgebouw, Concert Hall of the 21st Century, got involved – check out his contemporary selection. Or go for techno by Tom Trago, soul by FS Green & Full Crate, and don’t forget Job’s pop section if you’d still like to cross boundaries.
