FV 082 – Buhloone Mindstate

Although most of the music we played this week was very new, those first two tracks set the tone for me. I’ve never been the biggest De La Soul fan, but always loved their clever weirdness. The way they use loads of short skits, made their first 3 albums almost sound like a radio show. Buhloone Mindstate was their third album, and has been quite overlooked. But I’m happy we started the show with it this week. And if you want to go deeper, check out this essay for some more background info.

It’s quite a nice week for Red Light Radio, our homebase at the Red Light District in Amsterdam. Not only some great guests popped by because of the annual Amsterdam Dance Event, also it was the week a camera got installed for livestreaming, and the amazing Red Light Radio app got launched!

It’s not only the lovely studio we enjoy, but also to be part of a group of likeminded radio makers. So we don’t need your cash, but Red Light Radio needs some. To pay the rent, to fix a broken needle now and then, to support the guys who run the studio day & night and to keep that unlimited soundcloud account.

Some 2010 favourites

I’m not sure about lists. To be honest, there was probably a lot of great music I didn’t listen to last year. But looking back, I heard some nice things, during live performances, in DJ sets or just at home. Here are my 2010 favourites.

Micachu and the Shapes / London Sinfonietta
During a visit to London I suddenly fell in love with Mica Levi, aka Micachu, during her one off concert with London Sinfonietta, called Chopped and Screwed. The performance was like a mixtape; full of unreleased material, a raspy, stubborn voice, selfmade instruments and experiment – like something could go wrong any second. But it didn’t.

Dimlite
There always has been something about Dimlite that made him stand apart from what’s used to be the ‘beat generation’. Last year he did an excellent performance at North Sea Jazz festival and Trouw (both Viral Radio). Vulnerable but really going for it. It was also a pleasure to interview him.

Inc.
Just before the year finished I saw an amazing video of Teen Inc. – who now call themselves just Inc. It’s cool and thight and stylish and confident. Sofar they just released a 7″ (A: Fountains B: Friend of the Night). It hints to a very early Prince, and I’m looking forward to more music from them the next year.

Maxmillion Dunbar / Beautiful Swimmers
The sound of Maxmillion Dunbar and his label Future Times were a perfect companionship this summer. The clunky funkiness, early westcoast hiphop and electro influences combined with uplifting spirits and soundscapes were all I could wish for. And then the DJ set by Beautiful Swimmers upstairs in Paradiso made me forget about Theo Parrish playing downstairs. Enough said.

Ariel Pink
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti hit me a bit late, but when the album Before Today finally kicked in it was there to stay. It’s an album I’d like to hear from start to finish, an after I’m wondering why it has to end so soon. Seeing Ariel Pink live made me remember the importance of live bands. And anthems like Round and Round.

But yes, we kind of left this blog. And the studio. Sorry for the long summerbreak (and for the unanswered and even unopened e-mails), but tonight I decided to breath some new life into Future Vintage. Simply because sharing and selecting music is a lot of fun, and writing and making radioshows keeps the ears in shape. Probably next week I’ll start broadcasting from home, since ustream is the future. Have a little bit more patience.

Hopefully you do already know that Melodee just released her second La Melodia album, called Electronic Love. It’s out now (also on vinyl) and the first new live show will be the 9th of October in Bitterzoet. This week Future Vintage members are also out & about, since it’s time for Seeing Sounds again in Trouw, screening the classic Jamaican movie Rockers on Thursday. And then Friday Reinier and Radna play at the opening of the Madness & Arts festival in Haarlem. Christian suggested we open with this song by Prince Buster, and who knows – they call it madness.

I hope you had a nice summer, mine was a mix of work and play, walks and museum talks, and often Maxmillion Dunbar was on my iPod. I recommend to have a look, and a listen to his website: futuretimes.org.

Summer in the city

Summer has arrived and the city feels a bit more #zimzimma, #oochiewallie, #partyhard. So I’d like to share two mixes with you to get in this vibe and play on a summerjam. Reinier made a dedication to the rise of UK Funky for VPRO Dorst – which gets me in the mood for London’s Notting Hill Carnival in August. And those new boys on the block called L’Afrique Som Systeme mixed dancehall, dipset with a dubstep twist and fresh African music for Metro54.

Zick Zack Soundsystem presents…

To celebrate a new night at the SJU Jazz stage in Utrecht, the three gentlemen of Zick Zack Soundsystem present a mix dedicated to the musical diversity of UK soundsystem culture. If you’re into deep street soul, freestyle jazz, heavy bass funk, Caribean sounds and new electronic vibes from London, you’d probably love this.

June 11, the soundsystem plays in the bassment of SJU and hopes to bring a fresh flavour to the Utrecht music scene. This mix and the artwork (made by Hoax) are a promising start. Fudge special 11 juni by ZickZacksoundsystem
