So I’d like to share two mixes with you to get in this vibe and play on a summerjam. Reinier made a dedication to the rise of UK Funky for VPRO Dorst – which gets me in the mood for London’s Notting Hill Carnival in August. And those new boys on the block called L’Afrique Som Systeme mixed dancehall, dipset with a dubstep twist and fresh African music for Metro54.

Tomorrow Metro54 hosts a blockjam under station Bijlmer feat. Zwart Licht, 22Tracks, Viral Radio and Radna playing her favourite records + many more. It’s free, from 3PM-11PM, swing by!

PS: did you see the Appelsap line-up?

Dear listeners, we’re having a little springbreak at the moment, so there’s no show this week. Radna will be travelling to London in a few days, Melodee is finishing her new album, and Reinier is in the middle of squatting a building (and working on the tropical airwave mix, more on that soon). We won’t leave you with empty hands though. You can still download La Melodia’s ‘Come and get it‘ at Nalden.net. Then we’re also enyoing the recent radioshows of our friends from Holdboxflat and Hepcatradio. And James Pants just dropped a fresh Stones Throw podcast inlcuding some new tracks. Not to forget Antal is still diggin’ at Crazybirds. In the meantime even a new blog started of, dedicated to Nodnavigators, the little sister label of Kindred Spirits that is releasing Mweslee’s Eurocarne EP. Spring has arrived, and time is flying. R.I.P. Guru, and R.I.P. Steve Reid, who’s honoured with this mix by More Tea Vicar.

After the first edition of Seeing Sounds about the no-wave scene in Downtown New York, #2 is again about a city in crisis, that plays an essential role in recent music history. Detroit, the city of Motown soul and the automobile industry, is also known as the birthplace of techno music. Two short VPRO documentaries are screened: Kraftwerk & Detroit Techno and Detroit, Comeback City, while DJ Darco Cezveciyan plays music by pioneers of the techno movement. Also William de Bruijn, director of Detroit, Comeback City (1998) will be present to talk about the relation between the economics and architecture of Detroit and the music that originated there. “A complete mistake…like George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator, with only a sequencer to keep them company.” We’re going underground this time, so I hope to see you in de Verdieping tomorrow, the space below club Trouw Amsterdam.

To get in the mood, here’s a playlist of Detroit techno compiled by Underground Resistance. And some essential reading, 3 great interviews with techno’s founding fathers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. More info on Facebook and Twitter. Reinier is playing first, DJ Moussa (Boogie Bash crew) ends the show with his favourite boogie tunes, and somewhere in the middle you’ll find Dam-Funk’s set. He decided to play a 30 min. set with recent vinyl finds he collected during his European tour – even some funky tracks from the Netherlands and Italy are involved.

Apart from the Boogie Bash residents (KC, Boye, Moussa, Mike) no other dan Dam Funk will play a selection of funk, boogie and disco. And before you can have a drink at the Minibar, where the Moovmnt crew organises a teaser party.

Sounds like a great night out, and we are happy to give away two tickets for Paradiso. We only ask you to e-mail us a song you’d like to hear at the Boogie Bash (or otherwise in the Future Vintage show we’ll record this week). Send your favourite boogie tune to info@futurevintage.net. Friday morning the winner will be informed.

PS: at the same night the Gas Lamp Killer is playing in the main room. Music is a hell of a drug.

This Thursday, March 18th, I’m organising the first edition of Seeing Sounds, a film night about music culture at de Verdieping (Trouw). Every month Seeing Sounds will present a movie or documentary that has a strong connection with a certain part of music history, and there will be a DJ playing a set inspired by the film.

On the first edition you can see Downtown 81, a movie that captures the do-it-yourself vibe of downtown New York in the eighties. In the abonded buildings of the Lower East Side art and music came together, and in the film you’ll hear and see both early hiphop as no wave bands such as James White and the Blacks. The main character is Jean-Michel Basquiat, who’s then 19 years old. Later he would become -under the wings of Andy Warhol- the first Afro American artist of international fame, but in ‘81 Basquiat was still making his art on the street. Downtown 81 is one of my favourite movies ever, mainly because it captures the spirit of making something out of nothing, and gives a unique view on New York nightlife. Before and after, DJ Strange Boutique aka My Little Underground will play a set inspired by the film. Hope to see you there!

20.00 – 00.00 (start film 21.00) / de Verdieping / Wibaustraat 127 / Free Entrance / more info
