Future Vintage is a radioshow dedicated to discovering the history and future of soul, jazz, hiphop, electronic & psychedelic music, with no boundaries. It’s presented by Radna, Reinier and various guest DJ’s. We broadcast every Tuesday from 8-9PM on Red Light Radio, live from the Amsterdam red light district.
In 2007 Future Vintage was founded by Melodee, Radna, Tom Trago & KC the Funkaholic. Over here you’ll find the best shows from our extensive archive, new podcasts and news & views about the music we like to share with you.
"They play nothing that you would hear on the radio, but everything you’d rather hear on the radio." – Inquiringmind Magazine
Summer didn’t really took off here the last weeks, so both Reinier and I were hiding in the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam (where I took the pictures above). Curly teeth, the distant sound of steelbands and some tropical heatwave inspired us to make a mix for you. So check it out, still don’t make no sense. Making flippy floppy, trying to do our best. This saturday, Strange Fruit, our kindred spirits from Rotterdam, celebrate their 5th birthday. With quite a line up: Theo Parrish will be playing a 4 hour set, and Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf will also dig deep in the crates. Live act is Spec Boogie from Brooklyn, New York. If you don’t know him yet, check out the refreshing Bed Stuy. You’d like to be there? The good news is we have 2 tickets to give away. If you e-mail us the right answer to the question: Which Spike Lee film is sampled in Spec Boogie’s song Bed Stuy (mentioned above)? We wish Thelonious & Lucky Dubz a happy birthday.
E-mail us before wednesday, winners will get the news thursday.
May 14th – Strange Fruit – Westkruiskade 26 – Watt Café & Basement – €13,50
Get in the mood: 120 mins of Theo Parrish for RMBA Radio (2008)
Dear listeners, we’re having a little springbreak at the moment, so there’s no show this week. Radna will be travelling to London in a few days, Melodee is finishing her new album, and Reinier is in the middle of squatting a building (and working on the tropical airwave mix, more on that soon). We won’t leave you with empty hands though. You can still download La Melodia’s ‘Come and get it‘ at Nalden.net. Or scroll through our archive of more then 100 shows over here and here. Then we’re also enyoing the recent radioshows of our friends from Holdboxflat and Hepcatradio. And James Pants just dropped a fresh Stones Throw podcast inlcuding some new tracks. Not to forget Antal is still diggin’ at Crazybirds. In the meantime even a new blog started of, dedicated to Nodnavigators, the little sister label of Kindred Spirits that is releasing Mweslee’s Eurocarne EP. Spring has arrived, and time is flying. R.I.P. Guru, and R.I.P. Steve Reid, who’s honoured with this mix by More Tea Vicar.
After the first edition of Seeing Sounds about the no-wave scene in Downtown New York, #2 is again about a city in crisis, that plays an essential role in recent music history. Detroit, the city of Motown soul and the automobile industry, is also known as the birthplace of techno music. Two short VPRO documentaries are screened: Kraftwerk & Detroit Techno andDetroit, Comeback City, while DJ Darco Cezveciyan plays music by pioneers of the techno movement. Also William de Bruijn, director of Detroit, Comeback City (1998) will be present to talk about the relation between the economics and architecture of Detroit and the music that originated there. “A complete mistake…like George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator, with only a sequencer to keep them company.” We’re going underground this time, so I hope to see you in de Verdieping tomorrow, the space below club Trouw Amsterdam.
To get in the mood, here’s a playlist of Detroit techno compiled by Underground Resistance. And some essential reading, 3 great interviews with techno’s founding fathers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. More info on Facebook and Twitter. PS: If you’re into this, you also don’t want to miss Disco3000in Trouw this saturday, with Urban Tribe live, featuring Moodymann aka Kenny Dixon Jr, Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir & DJ Stingray – all from the D.
Since we heard Burgundy City, we’ve been big supporters of Dam-Funk. After the interview of last year, we were very happy to finally welcome the always friendly ambassador of modern funk in our studio. Sharing one mic (that’s why you can’t hear every presentation) but enjoying two hours of great funk, soul and disco from the future and past. Reinier is playing first, DJ Moussa (Boogie Bash crew) ends the show with his favourite boogie tunes, and somewhere in the middle you’ll find Dam-Funk’s set. He decided to play a 30 min. set with recent vinyl finds he collected during his European tour – even some funky tracks from the Netherlands and Italy are involved.
Listen below the full 2 hour show, and feel free te repost this (but please do mention our website). If you strictly want to download Dam-Funk’s set check:

The sun is out, and to start off the weekend there’s a special edition of the Boogie Bash- this friday at Paradiso. Apart from the Boogie Bash residents (KC, Boye, Moussa, Mike) no other dan Dam Funk will play a selection of funk, boogie and disco. And before you can have a drink at the Minibar, where the Moovmnt crew organises a teaser party.
Sounds like a great night out, and we are happy to give away two tickets for Paradiso. We only ask you to e-mail us a song you’d like to hear at the Boogie Bash (or otherwise in the Future Vintage show we’ll record this week). Send your favourite boogie tune to info@futurevintage.net. Friday morning the winner will be informed.
PS: at the same night the Gas Lamp Killer is playing in the main room. Music is a hell of a drug.
This Thursday, March 18th, I’m organising the first edition of Seeing Sounds, a film night about music culture at de Verdieping (Trouw). Every month Seeing Sounds will present a movie or documentary that has a strong connection with a certain part of music history, and there will be a DJ playing a set inspired by the film.
On the first edition you can see Downtown 81, a movie that captures the do-it-yourself vibe of downtown New York in the eighties. In the abonded buildings of the Lower East Side art and music came together, and in the film you’ll hear and see both early hiphop as no wave bands such as James White and the Blacks. The main character is Jean-Michel Basquiat, who’s then 19 years old. Later he would become -under the wings of Andy Warhol- the first Afro American artist of international fame, but in ‘81 Basquiat was still making his art on the street. Downtown 81 is one of my favourite movies ever, mainly because it captures the spirit of making something out of nothing, and gives a unique view on New York nightlife. Before and after, DJ Strange Boutique aka My Little Underground will play a set inspired by the film. Hope to see you there!
20.00 – 00.00 (start film 21.00) / de Verdieping / Wibaustraat 127 / Free Entrance / more info
Despite the great amount of podcasts nowadays, I sometimes do miss the experience of live radio. Not out of nostalgia, but mainly for that feeling of live broadcasting, of knowing that something is happening in the now – and you’re not able to skip. Recently live radio makes a comeback trough ustream. “You’re On”, it says, and that’s exactly what the website does: making it very ease to broadcast live.
There’s a lot of crappy webcam talkshows, but there are some great radio gems to find. My favourite ustream moment thusfar was the night when Mamiko was broadcasting live from London with James Pants and Hudson Mohawke, while Ras G, Lukid, Lorn and people from all over the world were listening and commenting in the chatbox – live.
All these shows are London based by the way. If you enjoy this, also take a look and sign the petition to save legendary London club Plastic People from closing. It’s a homebase for the music scene there, so please show support.
When exploring unknown territory of music, a DJ mix is often a good starting point. For me, jazz is still a bit distant and abstract (although I do have some jazz records, go to concerts and am in the middle of reading Sun Ra’s biography). It might change, also because Aardvarck just payed tribute to John Coltrane by sharing a one hour selection on RMBA Radio.
His choice for John Coltrane is maybe a surprise for those who know him from his techno and beat related productions, but Aardvarck has an encyclopidiac knowledge of music – and I’m happy he shares that with us. Oh and while your at it, please also check out the classic Sun Ra tribute by Max Cole & 1.1.
Like every year around February 14th, the web is full of Valentine mixes. Although I still enjoy KC the Funkaholic’s Quiet Storm (which is quite sexy, and quite funny, since both Marvin Gaye and Borat are involved) I also have to recommend the latest podcast by Stones Throw.
It features all the looks of love: the new, the forbidden, the unanswered, the one at first sight and the neverending. Also, the line-up of this mix is amazing: Dam-Funk, J.Rocc, James Pants, Peanut Butter Wolf and Mayer Hawthorne all play 10 minutes of love tracks. Happy Valentine!
