Hello and happy SUNDAY, everyone!
For the regular readers of this site, today’s post might throw you off a bit — because I normally don’t post on Sundays!
So first, thanks for just being here — I know that Sunday is a “funday” AKA detox-from-electronics day, so I appreciate you taking a few minutes to see what’s new on the site. But second, the reason I’m posting is because beginning with today, I’ll be sharing my week’s activities & vintage experiences in pictures every Sunday to inspire YOU as the week closes and opens into a fresh start on Monday.
The vintage lover in me held off for as long as she could, but a few weeks ago I bought into the “must have” electronic of today: the iPhone.
I’m so glad I did, though, because it’s inspired ME to inspire YOU by capturing my life in New York City and its stimulation that keeps me on my fashion-forward toes to share substance & style through the lens of my life on this site.
I love life. Life is beautiful (see picture above, captured on the Williamsburg Bridge yesterday!). Sometimes I struggle falling asleep at night because I just find life and its opportunities too exciting!
So, to calm my restlessness AND release some of it here, this weekly Sunday post will capture some of that excitement to inspire YOUR excitement, too. We all have so much to share with one another from wherever it is we live and the lens of our special, unique-to-us lives.
I look forward to hearing from you about my caught-on-iPhone pictures — from the vintage I spy, graffiti I geek out at and the fun events I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to attend.
Keep reading after the jump for a photographic glimpse into a week-in-the-life of Sammy Davis!
Tomorrow is 4th of July, and I’ll be sharing some very special and very “holiday appropriate” themed vintage available on Etsy … be sure to check back in for a few chuckles!
Whatever your patriotic style, investing in vintage is a key way to show love not only for your country, but the planet as a whole! Sustainability is always in style, no matter where you live!
See ya’ll back on the interwebs later this week …. hope you’ll be rejuvenated thanks to sun, fun & FIREWORKS!
xx, SD
LUCKY MAG SUMMER JAM SOCIAL
1-2-3 // I attended Lucky Magazine’s Summer Jam at Elsa in the East Village. What a sweet time (and drink!) I had! Huge thanks to Colleen, Alison & John for the event and chance to mingle with other fashion/beauty bloggers. I was so inspired by the event [and the new issue, featuring TONS of vintage in the pages and Christina Hendricks on the cover!] that I subscribed to the mag … for TWO YEARS! #longliveprint
4-5-6 // Ever hear of the Bumby’s? I had never heard of these fashion-judge // “stylestrologists” until I was invited to ” be judged” before this girl-guy incognito duo. Check out this article in the NY Times to learn more about their history … what do you think of my appraisal, by Madame Bumby? Eerie Confession: The Virgin Suicides is one of my all-time favorite movies … [how’d she know?!?!]
6 // I met a fellow vintage lover! She was wearing a maxi skirt as a halter dress. Brava for improvising vintage to work for YOU!
7 // My girl Nubia of Nubia’s Nonsense & I clowning around [go figure!] in our newly-acquired shades from the goody bag we received.
8 // Anne from Holier than Now — she’s wearing vintage Lily! All about the fun florals on even-more-fun blondes [we stick together!]
THANKS TO SHOT BY JAKE FOR THE EVENT’S PHOTOGRAPHY! HIS PHOTOS: 1, 2, 5
AOL STYLELIST EVENT AT PARTNERS & SPADES
1-2 // My blogger family over at AOL’S StyleList invited me to attend an event at Partners & Spades, an awesome advertising and design firm in downtown Manhattan. To keep things interesting during the workday, the firm annually rotates a themed exhibit related to one of their clients. This season’s theme? SURF! Thanks to working with surf & sun brand Quicksilver. Can’t get enough of those vintage surfboards & board shorts.
I definitely think that surf-inspired-California-style is bound for a comeback. I’m predicting summer 2012 — we’ll be seeing Hawaiian prints and palm tree designs along with athletically-cut, casual pieces in mainstream stores.
3 // I saw my friend Sabrina of A New Mode at the event … and couldn’t miss her double-knuckle ring and bling bling Michael Kors oversize watch! LOVE this combo!
4 // There was a vintage coke machine at Partners & Spade! When I have all the money in the world, a vintage coke machine [and maybe a ping ball machine, too] will be one of my “fun” investment pieces for the home.
MEETING THE SAMMY DAVIS VINTAGE INTERN EXTRAORDINAIRE!
1 -2 // EXCITEMENT! I met Meg on Twitter when I was hunting for the perfect Sammy Davis Vintage intern & assistant extraordinaire. Meg, a recent grad of West Virginia University, is all of that AND more. Check out her sweet style in all of these pics! I met her for the FIRST time yesterday … it was like meeting an old friend, thanks to our many emails/text messages/Skype chats.
She’s sticking around NYC for the holiday weekend to see friends and then headed back to West Virginia to keep rocking the vintage love!
3-4-5 // Meg & I visited a handful of vintage stores in the Lower East Side … and ran into some very interesting pieces of vintage decor along the way! The slinky? Well, that was on the street … but you can’t get anymore nostalgic about your childhood than as inspired by a slinky!
6 // Check out Meg’s HOTNESS in this rad lime green “carpet” coat by epic ’60s designer Norma Kavali. We were at David’s Vintage in the Lower East Side — check it out!
7 // Another thing worth checking out: KOMBUCHA! It’s my favorite “splurge” drink (about $4 a bottle in NYC) and Meg was in love at her first sip. So rejuvenating and refreshing! The drink is essentially the juices of fermented mushrooms. Sounds gross, tastes delicious.
8 // Can you guess what these are? And no, they are not hot pants ;-) A man’s bathing suit a la the ’40s! I want my future boyfriend to rock this ;-)
9 // I dubbed Meg “mermaid” because she is so attracted to pretty pastels [bubblegum pink looks amazing on her!] and anything shell-sea-water-sea creature related, like these awesome vintage seashell earrings at Some Odd Rubies in the Lower East Side.
THE WEEK’S GRAFFITI INSPIRATION
1-2-3 // I believe that graffiti trucks follow me. Or, my eyes are just open to seeing them left & right. I’ve always been a lover of graffiti — the brights, DIY approach influences my personal style.
4 // No, this isn’t a graffiti wall in the city … but on the WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE! Meg & I walked across the bridge from the LES to grab dinner in Williamsburg. The hike was definitely worth it — especially for the beautiful view of the city we had.
5 // You would, wouldn’t you?! ;-) One of my favorite tags that I’ve been spotting here and there around the city. Hopefully I’ll find more to post next week!
