Always Order Dessert Hosts a Fabulous Vintage [1963!] Holiday Party

by Sammy Leave a Comment

It was the evening of the biggest snowstorm to hit New York in years. Or, at least, in my recollection of living in New York City.

Grand total, 2 years.

But either way, on the evening of December 19th, 2009, I had a vintage holiday party to attend to compliments of my favorite food blogger, Always Order Dessert.

I started getting ready around 7PM. When I stepped out into my breezeway to head out of my apartment and to the party, I realized that the soft flakes an hour or two earlier had grown in strength to sticky-bastards catching and coating the ground.

When I stepped outside my apartment, there was nearly four inches on the ground already. Yellow cabs, black cabs, buses, cars, bicyclists, you name it — were all freaking out.

There was no way I was taking the Camry. And no way was I wearing heels in this mess.

So I hopped back upstairs, put on some boots [that I secretly loathe] and caught the crosstown bus. While on it, a voice over the radio advised bus drivers to put vehicles in “low-gear.”

Oh geez.

But like any hardcore vintage fashionista, I made it to the party. And what happened [not to mention all that I enjoyed eating!] happened below.

Thank you, Alejandra!

Harlem in the snow, post-party. By midnight, about 6 inches were tightly packed on the ground. I risked this walk home [which I ended up taking — from St. Nicholas to Lexington along 116th Street] to make the bash a la ‘63.

Well worth the snowy journey home.

But I did it all just to sample a piece of this jello-cucumber-cilantro concoction …

… and to meet the chef/blogger-extraordinaire, Alejandra, with the vintage touch … [and a sweet dress to boot!]

Who gave me such sweet treats as … Marshmellow salad?!

Along with a platter of Salmon dip?!

And we can’t forget hardboiled eggs, dip designed like a hedgehog [for the record, his name was not Sonic], finger sandwiches and other assorted hours d’oeuvres-esque and appetizer foods that the ladies & gents of Mad Men may have salivated over in 1963. [not sayin’ we weren’t, either]

OH. And we can’t forget the bar … [my personal contribution to the party, an early 70s vintage ice bucket is in the left-hand corner!]

And Rice Krispies treats for dessert!

I ate this all while wearing my own dress straight-up-from-the-60s …

… along with some pretty rockin’ pearl earrings and necklace …

… bright red gloves you’d expect to see on Grandma [but they were on me] …

… and this hot hot hot silver clutch with metal hardware.

So how did I get home on the evening of a 10-inch snowstorm in NYC, you ask?

Leopard print galoshes/boots. That didn’t match any of the outfit above. But alas, they worked.

Oh, what a night.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
