Happy Winter Wednesday, everyone!!
It may still be clocking in at at [the most!] 30 degrees in most parts of the country today, but last week I defied the brutal elements of mother nature and accessorized a new vintage find purchased with love from one of my favorite vintage boutiques in the entire COUNTRY at the Manhattan Vintage Show last weekend.
The store? Artifaktori Vintage, owned & curated by Amy Berkowitz — vintage expert and fashion enthusiast. The original store is located in Somerville’s Davis Square — i.e. college town central! — but a new location is set to open [Amy predicts April!] in the more snazzy neighborhood of Charles Street. Visit in good ‘ole Beantown, or check out the store’s online Etsy shop for digital style pleasures.
The dress? A summer shift number from the ’60s designed by Tori Richard and originally sold in Honolulu. Tori Richard is a designer/brand out of Honolulu since 1956 — the web site even proudly states so.
Tori Richard’s dress structure and design aesthetic mirrors the same principles of Lily Pulitizer, only with less prominence in the public eye. We all know Lily for her floral shift dresses that she began making in the ’50s for the sole purpose of gardening [it’s true!].
Tori, like Lily, has stood the test of time and maintained a high-quality brand that originated more than 60 years ago but has only changed with a few contemporary tweaks and considerations. The original design — or overall “feel” — of the brand remains today.
I was stoked to take home this bright number from Artifaktori for an excuse to colorize my very black-grey-nude wardrobe as of late. I’m sure you can all agree: when there’s 2 feet of snow on the ground, the last thing you want to really care about is how “colorful” your outfit is. When the weather turns rough, it’s all about personal convenience, seasonal convention and non-creativity.

It may be February, but you don’t have to make it a fashion fun-less February. Try adding one colorful accessory or style element to your wardrobe today for a winter-woe-pick-me-up. Focus on adding something fun everyday and before you know it, spring will be HERE!
