6 Ideas for Vintage Projects from Thrift Shop Items

by Nicole 1 Comment

Sometimes, all we need is a little spark to ignite a creative flame. I love looking at images of DIY vintage projects. Seeing what other people out there can come up with is completely inspiring and eye opening. In this post, I’ve gathered together my top 6 DIY vintage projects, which you can make from items that you find at thrift stores. The items are pretty common place themselves, like a lampshade or dusty old figurine, but I’ve collected ideas that help me see these items with fresh eyes! The magic happens once you bring the item home, and get your creative hands on it!

I just loved this lampshade idea. It is simple, and you know how commonplace lampshades are. Every thrift store it seems has dozen or so, hanging around in a back corner and gathering dust. So buy one that catches your eye, and take it home! Clean it off and attach your own crafty touch, like butterflies or flowers.

2. Fabulous Figurines

Antique and vintage figurines can feel a little bit old-person-ish (is that a word?) But when you paint them entirely while, they are suddenly super-chick. These figurines are perfect for guestroom nightstands, bathroom, or as an accent on a bookshelf. Find a shape that you like, and paint it completely matte white (or another color of your choosing! Matte is best for a modern look).

Every home should have a few plants in it. Plants make us feel happy, and they purify the air! There is no need to have boring planters around your apartment or home. Check out some vintage antique stores or go goodwill shopping, and keep an eye out for simple, ceramic planters. Then re-imagine them and add some flair by hanging them with colorful ropes! I love the macrame planter ideas that show us a whole new way to showcase our colorful green friends.

5. Fork Wall Hanging

This wallhanging gave me so many ideas. A great place to start is a simple wooden design like this one, with three forks upturned as hooks. But can you imagine a long piece of wood with eight to a dozen hooks, on which you could hang mis-matched coffee and tea cups? I can! I think this would look great in a funky coffee shop or tea bar. I can’t wait to make one for my own kitchen. You could also make a short one and hang it by the door!

6. Wagon Wheel Table

Big pieces of gorgeous, rustic old metal are perfect to put to use in the yard. Wagon wheels can become legs for tables, as this genius design displays. It is so fun to think outside of the box. Round instead of square legs? I’m in. Let’s not get stuck on our table designs people. Who said tables need four legs? This fantastic design proves otherwise.
