5 Fun Vintage Items To Start Collecting Now

by Bonnie Leave a Comment

Maybe you’ve realized that you have a cupboard full of nifty salt and pepper shakers. Or, that your closet is awfully full of designer scarves. My friend, you are close to starting a collection! Why not dive right in, and really become a collector? Take your hobby to the next level, and make it official. If you’re unsure about what to collect, here are some fun ideas!

1. Cookbooks from a specific decade

Table of Contents

  • 1. Cookbooks from a specific decade
  • 2. Salt and pepper shakers
  • 3. Vintage playing cards
  • 4. Designer scarves
  • 5. Cuff links
  • 6. China tea cups

I have a friend who loves to order used cookbooks online. She also checks her local Good Will for used cookbooks each time she pops in. She loves to find books that are from the 50s, and she has developed a great collection! It’s fun when she shares recipes or cooks meals from her favorite books.

2. Salt and pepper shakers

You know that back aisle of vintage kitchenware at your local second hand shop? I’m guessing there are quite a few sets of salt and pepper shakers there! Some of the ones I’ve seen at my local shop are really cute — they look like little figurines.

3. Vintage playing cards

Maybe you enjoy playing cards or just have an interest in Poker or Blackjack or the whole casino culture. Or maybe you got lucky and found a vintage set in good condition at a garage sale. A quality vintage deck of cards can sell for over $2,500 on eBay after all!  Personally I think the history of playing cards is fascinating.  They date all the way back to the Tang dynasty around the 9th century AD. The very first cards did not contain suits or numbers. Instead, they were printed with instructions or forfeits for whomever drew them. Experts think that the first cards could have been doubled as paper currency that was used as tools of gaming and the stakes being played for, very similar to trading card games today.

4. Designer scarves

This one is fun because you can wear your collection! It’s a fun hobby and a fashion accessory. Plus, you could start selling the used scarves that you collect. What a great way to make a side income!

5. Cuff links

Older generations of men and even women wore cuff links on special occasions. These little gems are still bopping around in our second hand stores. Start keeping an eye out for them, and become an expert at cleaning and restoring them.

6. China tea cups

Fill a cupboard with beautiful china tea cups. You’ll be able to throw tea parties that your guests will keep talking about for years to come!
