How to Deal with an Engagement Ring that You Don’t Like

by Nicole Leave a Comment

So, your long-term partner got down on one knee and asked you the million-dollar question. And, seeing that you’re reading this article, we can tell that you said yes! Congratulations!

Apart from your dream wedding dress, you expect your engagement ring to be the prettiest piece of jewelry you’ve ever owned. But what happens when it’s the other way around? The look of utter disappointment creeps on your face when you see it and you contemplate whether you must show off your ring or not. If you don’t like your engagement ring, know that other women have been there and you’re not alone.

You don’t have to feel guilty about your feelings toward your engagement ring. This problem is common among brides-to-be, and we’re here to give you some advice to help you when your engagement ring isn’t exactly what you expected.

Whether it’s custom, inherited, or vintage engagement rings, it’s difficult to like a gift when you think it’s ugly or it’s not your style. However, for the sake of feelings, it wouldn’t hurt to try and live with it for a few weeks to see if your perception of it changes. Try to mix it in your daily wardrobe choices and maybe it’ll grow on you. It’s essential to give that engagement ring a chance.

Deciding on Changing the Ring

After you have given it ample time to consider, maybe you’re still having doubts and regrets about the ring. If you are, you’ll need to gently and honestly communicate with your partner about your feelings regarding the engagement ring.

Listening to the Other Side of the Story

You should know by now that honest, respectful and loving communication is the key to a successful relationship. Think of this challenge as an opportunity to exercise problem-solving and open dialogue between both of you. You should present your thoughts carefully, avoid placing blame and let him know that you appreciate the thought and money he put into choosing a ring for you.

During this conversation, chances are, you’ll have an idea of why your partner chose that style for you. Everyone has their reasons, after all. This dialogue won’t be an easy one for either of you. However, if the sight of the ring is still upsetting you, you’re better off telling your partner sooner rather than later.

Avoiding the Guilty Feeling

There’s nothing wrong with honestly telling your partner how you feel about the engagement ring. Of course, it won’t be pleasant if you’re not too happy or at least excited about the ring but you shouldn’t feel guilty. It’s not that you’re ungrateful; you simply don’t like it.

Compromising on the Ring

When your fiance explains why they chose the ring, you’ll see it from a fresh perspective. Maybe you can learn to appreciate it after the explanation because you see it in a new light. But, this obviously isn’t a guarantee. If you’re leaning toward the decision of changing the ring or at least making some tweaks, make sure to factor in the main reason that he picked the ring in the first place. For example, he chose a diamond with a heart cut to signify his love for you, keep that heart-shaped diamond cut. You can change the band or make other custom changes.

A brand new engagement ring should come with a return policy. For situations involving an heirloom engagement ring, you can compromise on when can wear it, such as family events or special occasions. Custom rings, on the other hand, can be tricky. You can talk to the ring’s original designer and trusted jeweler on how you can alter its appearance.
