Looking After Your Vintage Rings

by Nicole Leave a Comment

90% of couples exchange at least one ring when they get engaged, and almost 100% of couples exchange two wedding gold rings. Many couples choose vintage rings when they get engaged and married, often picking a ring that belonged to a beloved family member, or something that has significant sentimental meaning. It is also on trend to repurpose precious stones from other pieces of vintage jewelry. If you have chosen beautiful vintage engagement and wedding rings, it is important that you look after them properly. If they are cleaned and polished regularly, they will stay looking beautiful for a lifetime.

 Caring for diamonds

According to research done by wedding experts, The Knot, 86% of people choose a diamond for their centerstone in an engagement ring. Even though they are the hardest substance known to man, diamonds need special care. If you never take your engagement ring off, then it is unlikely that the stone will get scratched, but if you are storing it in with other jewelry, make sure that you put it in it’s own velvet pouch. Diamonds can be scratched by other diamonds, so it is important that you keep them apart. Diamonds can look cloudy if they get a build up of dirt, grease or skin oils on them, so you should get your diamond ring cleaned regularly by a professional. They will be able to make sure that the stone setting is free from dirt too.

Looking After Your Vintage Rings

 Cleaning your jewelry at home

If you want your vintage rings to always look their best, then you should regularly give them a clean and polish at home. It is important that you buy specialist jewelry cleaner to do this. Household cleaners, such as vinegar, window cleaner, ammonia, rubbing alcohol and toothpaste are not suitable for cleaning jewelry, and will build up on stones rather than making them sparkle. You should also never use abrasive cleaners if you are trying to remove any tarnish caused by oxidization – you will only end up scratching the metal. A soft cloth and ordinary soap and water is best. It is not advisable to use an ultrasonic cleaning machine for vintage jewelry.

 Wearing your rings every day

You might find that there are certain daily activities where you will want to remove your vintage rings in order to protect them. This might include exercising, gardening, baking (especially if you are kneading dough), working around machinery, and using power tools. Every month, make sure that you check over your vintage rings. If you have stones that are in a claw setting, just make sure that they are firmly in place and aren’t wobbling – sometimes the prongs can get worn down. If you feel that the stones are loose, take them to a professional jeweler or goldsmith to check over the settings and make any necessary repairs.

If you have vintage wedding and engagement rings, you should take special care of these. If they are well looked after, they will last you forever and make beautiful heirlooms for the next generation.
