HAPPY GRATEFULNESS FRIDAY EVERYONE!!!
Undoubtedly one of my favorite days of the week, and today is no different (and no less grateful!) especially because I’m excited to share with you the first Gratefulness Friday VIDEO!
I believe that gratitude is a pay-it-forward model — which is why I wasn’t surprised to learn that my friend’s mom wanted me to look through her 1980s vintage clothing collection and give my favorite pieces from her closet happy homes.
When you are grateful for what you have right this very instant, you are opening your heart & mind to more positive opportunities.
I was so excited to hear that I was about to inherit some brand spankin’ new specks of vintage style! And then I got to thinking: Do I really NEED all of this? No, not really!
Like many of you will probably agree, we have closets overflowing with clothes that we “don’t know how to wear” … which is often times an excuse because we haven’t taken the time to figure out how to mix & match them into other outfits in the first place.
So, without further ado, instead of hoarding all of these fabulous ’80s-baby pieces to myself, I’m giving away three of the prettiest dresses for spring that should hopefully fit — and most definitely flatter — any of this post’s gratefulness giveaway winners!
Keep reading after the jump to watch the behind-the-scenes video of my “vintage fashion haul” from my friend’s mom’s closet, and also to learn just how to enter this week’s Sammy Davis Vintage giveaway!
And OF COURSE! I am so grateful for my readers and supporters of vintage fashion & thrift store style here on Sammy Davis Vintage. HUGE thank you — yes, YOU! — for reading this post right this very moment.
I hope that this week’s content was both informative, enlightening AND entertaining — from learning about the key differences between vintage designer tags and picking up a few bits of thrift speak from the “second hand streets” (HA!) — my goal is to provide you with an online resource where you can listen, learn and LOVE your personal, beautiful style that is YOU.
Catch ya’ll on Monday with some fresh fun — and if you’re musing about a topic and want some insight, please send me a note via email ([email protected]), Twitter, Facebook … or if you want to go true vintage, SNAIL MAIL!
With vintage love & style peace!
xx, SD

My favorite fashion memory from childhood-HANDS DOWN – when I discovered that I could FINALLY fit into some of my mom’s clothes. In 6th grade. My mom was quite the budget fashionista – putting together fabulous outfits from her favorites- Fashion Bug & Target ;) I remember in 6th grade for a winter dance, wearing one of her cowl neck sweater dresses with a big funky belt & some of those ankle boots that are now coming back into style!
Fun dresses -i LOVE the red/brown striped one!
Sammy says
What a FANTASTIC MEMORY HEATHER! hahaha! I think I was about 12 years old when I was tall enough to fit into my mom’s clothes ;-)
BetsyM says
I loved my stirrup pants! Couldn’t get enough of those and my faux patent leather keds.
Andi says
Such cute dresses!
When I was little (four or five) I had this amazing hot pink Mickey Mouse top-and-leggings set. The top included gold sparkles. I wore it to Six Flags and when we ran into Bugs Bunny, he pointed at the shirt and shook his head emphatically. Ah, branding.
Brittany says
my favorite memory is that my mom always used to put me in these floral print jumpers for every special occasion i must of had like 20 jumpers !!! she made me wear them till i was like 12. hahaha

I remember reading magazines looking for the latest trends. I remember cowl neck shirts.

I saw a black/white houndstooth dress in a window once in highschool and it was soo pricey. Did not want to spend the money for it so my mom went and looked then made a pattern out of grocery bags, found the exact material and made the dress for me! I loved, loved that dress and wish I had kept it because I would still wear it today.
Jessica S says
I had a green bell skirt I rocked my first day of school, it was a favorite for awhile & I wish I still had it.
Erin Thornburgh says
I can also remember the stirrup pants and double-socks!!! too funny! snap bracelets and charms …
But some of the best memories I have are of my sisters and I playing “dress-up” — not the kind that most think of (wearing dresses and mom’s heels), but the kind wher we put on the most ridiculous things we could find! Swimsuits over jeans, skirts with striped socks, anything we could find! (and I mean ANYTHING — I actually have a picture that we laugh about — we have actually attached one the those neon clacker toys into a headband!!! WHAT A LOOK!) I love those memories of my sisters!
L of Avid Accents says
OMG…i have a few! cross colors, stirrups and blossom hats! those were the days….lol

Hi Sammy, thanks for the giveaway, the dresses are so flirty!
My favorite fashion memories from childhood are the 80s wrap skirts, I had them in several colors and floral prints, they were so fun to wear specially in the Summer!

My favorite fashion memory would have to be from when I was about 13. My mom has all her old clothes from the 70’s up in the attic, and one day i was looking through them and i found the CUTEST pair of minnetonka style lace up navajo boots made of tan suede that hit just below the knee. I instantly fell in love and wore them to death for three years. Then, just about when holes started to form on the bottom of them, my mom took me out to get a brand new pair :) Iv’e always adored the native american style since, and I’m psyched to see them coming into style! I used to feel so unique when i wore them, but it’s still pretty cool to feel like you’re setting a trend :) I still wear my ones from when i was 16 to this day, they go with just about everything… especially dresses ;)
Oh, and it is very generous of you to do a giveaway like this, Sammy!
P.S. the red and burnt orange stripped dress as fabulous! <3

My favorite fashion memory from my childhood was suspenders! I remember how awesome they were back when I was around 8. Everyone wore them. During that time, of course..only jean suspenders were the most common. Suspenders were even my school uniform back in the day (lol). I liked the skirt + suspenders trend more than the pants though. But I love how this trend has been modernized today. They even offer suspender tights now, which is selling out like crazy!
Gissell says
My favorite fashion memory when I was just a youngin’ would probably when I was in third grade. I had this favorite outfit that I would always wear. It consisted of a long colorful tunic with rainbow tights. It was soo cute! Until I grew it out and had to abandon it. :( But it was a good time back then. ^_^

I remember as a child, my mother would make gorgeous handmade Easter dresses for my sister and I. It was always exciting for me because I’d have something different and unique, not the same old fancy dresses that you could buy at the store. Even more exciting, was that we could select accessories for our outfits from a vast collection of hats, gloves and vintage jewelry that once belonged to my grandmother. My mother made us many special occasion clothes, but the Easter dresses were always my favorite!

My favorite fashion memory is when I was 10 years old. My Dad decided he wanted to bring me shopping for a new dress. Mom was always the person to bring me shopping so this was an exceptional treat! When we arrived at the store, I looked through many dresses. I was having a really hard time deciding between two dresses. To my astonishment, Dad told me I could get both! Wow, that was so exciting. And I remember one of the dresses had a matching little purse. My Dad has passed away but I will always have some great memories like this one to keep near my heart.
Mary Beth says
My favorite fashion childhood memory is arranging all my multi-colored turtlenecks in rainbow order. I had every color of the rainbow and then some!!
FYI I NEED that dress. I’m going to the Bahamas next month!! Ha-ha.

I am loving the striped dress and the bubble skirt!
Hmm favorite fashion memory from childhood…let me start by saying that I was pentecostal until age 17 so I wore/cared/knew very little about fashion. But my favorite thing was these jumpers my mom made me. I had 5 of them so I wore one every weekday to school :)
Rachel says
Hi Sammy!! I was born in the late 80s so I remember my mom dressing in oversized t-shirts that she tucked into her jeans. She had very thin hair that she would try to “volumize” and tease. My dad would wear muscle tanks and EXTREMELY short jean shorts that he cut himself. As for me, I grew up in jelly shoes, baggy jeans, and butterfly hair clips.

Let me tell you: nobody could pull off apple overalls like my five-year-old self did. (: The entire bodice of the overalls was a monster-sized, cartoon-y apple, and I don’t know. It was definitely a…statement piece. I remember my first day of kindergarten [which wasn’t everyone else’s first day since I started late] and being introduced in front of the class. After school when I came home, my next door neighbor came over to play. I opened the door, and he said, “Hey, some girl in my class wore overalls just like that!”
My reaction: “…who’s your teacher?”
And, of course, we were in the same class. He just didn’t recognize me at school. -______-
Yeeeeah. My best friend couldn’t even tell it was me. Good thing for obnoxious apple overalls…

My favorite fashion memory from childhood was when my parents would go on trips & my mom would always bring me back the greatest gifts (usually a cute outfit)!! one gift in particular stands out- it was a bright floral sundress that came with a huge straw hat with matching fabric tie around it. i loved it to death and felt SO cool in my big hat!! i’d wear that outfit now if i could find it! theres just something about a great dress that makes you feel so special when you wear it!

Watching my mom get dressed up for her weekly dinner date with my dad or for more formal events. Great 70s outfits, boots, and coats, many of which are now mine. Thanks, mom!!

One of my favorite fashion memories from childhood is playing dress-up in my neighbors dress-up trunk. It was filled with fabulous vintage items that their mother had wore in her younger days! I would love to get my hands on some of the items that were in that trunk to wear now!

I was born in 1983. In the late 80s, my little life was made complete by an oversized black t-shirt with a lime green graphic and matching lime green pedal pushers.
Everyday I got to put that on was a dream.
Of course, part of it had to be that I only really got to wear it on weekends as I went to Catholic school and had to wear the uniform.
I don’t think I have ever had another item of clothing that made me that happy every time I wore it.
