How to Have a Vintage Holiday in 3 Simple Steps

by Sammy Leave a Comment

The holidays are coming! The holidays are coming!

Err, actually, being that it’s December 1st … the holiday season is officially here.

I’ve already purchased some gifts from the small Ma & Pa boutiques in my hometown, and I plan on ordering a few more goodies from vintage marketplaces like eBay and Etsy tonight. I don’t want to miss out on the Black Friday – Cyber Monday sales!

If you’re in the mood for some online vintage-holiday themed shopping, I have the 3 easiest things to buy to set the season’s merry mood … vintage style. These are tried-and-true remedies for the “ho-hum” frustration you may be experiencing now that the radio is playing Christmas music non-stop and your kids keep asking for a Xbox Playstation.

What are your vintage-themed holiday traditions? Can I add anything to this list for next year? Leave your suggestions in the comments below!

happy holidays and big hugs!

xx, Sammy

Growing up, The Snowman was one of my favorite holiday movies.

Released in 1982, the beautifully animated movie is narrated by none other than David Bowie, whose English accent adds another enchanting element to an already breathtaking portrayal of a little boy’s journey to the land of the snowmen one stormy winter’s night.

Watch this scene from the movie to hear a sampling of its beautiful orchestra, and to remember what it was like to be a child again.

You can grab a DVD of The Snowman here and check out other vintage cinema classics that’ll inspire you to light up a fire, sip some hot cocoa and enjoy!

Step 2: Set Up a 1950s – 1960s Aluminum Christmas Tree

Even if you have a traditional evergreen tree set up in your living room, you can find a 1950s-1960s era aluminum silver Christmas tree for a fun and funky vintage addition to your modern holiday display. I love them because they feel so Space Age .. as if your tree is going to lift off and fly into the future!

If your children or fellow family members wanted to get silly for the season, the aluminum Christmas tree is a canvas for getting creative. Check out my collection of vintage Christmas tree ornaments for ideas on what unique decorations you can use to glitz and glam this tree.

You can even let it “as is” and drape your jewelry on it for a fashionable, back-from-the-future holiday tree.

Step 3: Wear Yourself an Ugly Christmas Sweater

There – I said it – the ugly holiday Christmas sweater is a staple in the seasonal wardrobe. Inevitably, you will be invited to a ugly sweater Christmas party and you’ll be left struggling to find something at the local thrift store, which was picked over by the happy hipsters way back on Halloween.

The good news is that vintage purveyors have caught on to the ugly holiday sweater trend and are stocking the very best and mint condition in their online shops. The “ugly” sweater shown above (and I italicize ugly, because I think it’s actually kind of cool!)

Search for “ugly holiday sweaters” online or check out my collections of Ugly Holiday Sweaters (That Are Kind of Cool!) and Ugly Holiday Vests on eBay!
