How to Wear Vintage Lace: 5 Looks To Try Today

by Bonnie Leave a Comment

It always feels so good to find a piece of vintage lace that is in great condition. However, I find that when I come across a great lacy piece at the local thrift shop I usually take it home only to have it sit in the closet. The problem is, lace is difficult to wear in everyday situations. The texture, delicacy, and ornamental qualities of lace can make it feel so special that you only want to wear it on the right occasions (like weddings) instead of for a trip to the market or tea with a friend. Here are some ways that I have found, with a little digging, to help me wear lace more often. I hope that you find some looks that you love!

A wool knit scarf adds some depth to a light, airy top. Pair with jeans and boots, and you’ve got yourself a cute, casual outfit! If you are uncomfortable with the transparency of your lacy top, try wearing a thin, fitted tank-top or camisole underneath.

2. Plaid and Lace Scarf

A plaid and lace scarf is a perfect way to incorporate a touch of vintage lace into your everyday style. You can add a strip of lace to a scarf that you make out of thrifted flannel (the DIY tutorial above can be completed in 15 minutes!) or look for a scarf on Etsy or Amazon for a scarf that’s been  premade by another crafty soul.

3. Lace Collar With Solid Knit Top

Vintage lace could change your day at the office big time. You’ll feel delicate and special, and others will notice that you’re carrying yourself with a touch more grace. Lace offers us a connection to the past, and a sense of timelessness that can turn the Monday Blues upside down. Try adding a lacy color to your usual work-wear. It’s a great way to change your mood and love yourself.  You can make an elegant collar on your own by sewing lace in the shape of a collar to onto the neckline of a solid knit top. Or, buy a vintage blouse that already includes this feature. If you already own a button up lacy top but have not found the occasion to wear it, try it out underneath a solid, modern top of a similar color.

4. Sweet Lace Pendants

A great way to mix some vintage vibes into your modern outfits is to think about your accessories. Vintage lace is so detailed and eye grabbing that even just a little touch of it will do. These lacy pendent necklaces made by Laura over at Dishfunctional Designs are the perfect addition to a simple outfit. If you have scored some vintage lace and are dying to get it into your daily style, why not try to make one of these yourself? Find a squarish pendant and glue a piece of lace on top. Add some trimming to keep the edges from fraying.

 5. Off-White Lacey Skirt With Printed Top

Fashionista Shaelin Summers paired this off-white lace skirt with black pumps, a printed top and colorful scarf. The look turns out bold and creative. I love the way the color, prints, and lace are balanced out by solid black heels. This outfit goes to show that lace can be worn with other items that have features of their own. You might not guess that antique off white lace would go with hot pink, until you see it for yourself! So try on a few outfits that you consider too bold or wild, and see what it looks like all together. It can be helpful to snap a photo or get a friend to give you a second opinion.

Lace is airy and delicate, but it can be balanced out if you wear it the right way. Mix lace with denim, plaid, knit scarfs, or prints. Add a touch of lace to an outfit by accessorizing with it. When it comes to lace, you might have to experiment a little bit! Try on a few outfits, and see what works. I’d love to hear about your discoveries in the comments below!
