Thrift Shop Dividing Walls To Transform Your Space

When I was growing up, my parents remodeled our house. Instead of building three separate kids rooms for my sisters and I, they went with an open concept second story which we all shared. As us girls older, we wanted rooms of our own. That’s when I learned about the magic of room dividers!

Fabric, wood, bamboo, or glass can all be used to section off portions of wide open room. A divider will completely change the feel of your space — from the flow of traffic, to the way heat, light, and sound move through the room. Here are some fun ideas for room dividers made with second-hand finds.

Recycled Shutters

Your home might not have shutters on the outside, but what about the inside? Recycled shutters could give you the perfect raw material for creating a great room divider.  You’ll need to get creative and bust out some carpentry moves, so this project isn’t for everybody. Hinge several shutters together to make a folding panel, attach some legs, and then paint them to match your interior decor.

Floor To Ceiling Drapes

Window treatments are often one of the first things to go during a home makeover. That means that us thrift shoppers get to pick through lots of gorgeous shades, curtains, and drapes! Long, floor to ceiling drapes could make a great room divider.

When you want some privacy, simply pull the drape closed and create a thick, fabric wall. Surprisingly, if the fabric is thick enough it will even cut down on noise transfer, and might help you manage the heat in different sections of the room.

Rustic Lights

Sometimes, a room divider is more for show than anything else. If you’re not worried about controlling heat, light, or sound with your room divider, consider doing something airy and artistic like the project above. Recycled wood, little LED lights, and twigs create a romantic, rustic feel!

Beautiful Bamboo

Bamboo shades are usually used on windows. However, they work really well as room dividers too. A little bit of light can travel through them, which makes them great for outdoor spaces. Imagine hanging one on your porch, to section off a quiet sanctuary for reading and relaxation.

Once in a while, I find a piece of vintage fabric that is too good to be true. I love to look at the designs and colors from different decades and places around the world. Do you ever fall in love with vintage prints on table cloths or sheets? Consider turning your treasures into room dividers. You’ll introduce the pretty print into your interior and create some privacy at the same time.

Lots of Lace

Hang lace from the ceiling for a shabby chic look. Your divider will be see through, so don’t use this method if you’re seeking true privacy, like in a bathroom. Also, be careful when you wash aged lace. You’ll want to soak it instead of scrubbing it.

Recycled Windows

We’ve already seen how window treatments, like shutters, drapes and shades, can work as room dividers. How about the windows themselves? Yes! Repurpose used windows by creating a “wall” out of several of them.

If you’re yearning for an upgrade to your space, but don’t know where to start, think about adding in a room divider or two. Shades, curtains, windows, and panels can turn portions of the room into havens of peace and quiet.
