If you’re at a loss for what to do this weekend, fear not! There’s no need to scour event calendars or movie times last minute again. Sometimes we all need a little inspiration and encouragement to think outside the box. The following five vintage-inspired things to do this weekend are sure to show you a good time.
1. Go bowling
Bowling is that once in a blue moon opportunity to rock some retro shoes and appreciate the game’s roots. Up until the 1950s, a “pin boy” would set up the bowled pins by hand, so we’re lucky that things are more mechanical now. And if you’re lucky enough, you might live near an alley that has vintage-inspired décor! So round up some friends for a fun afternoon or evening of bowling this weekend.
2. Take a walk outside
Get outside this weekend, no matter what the weather is like. Sometimes there’s nothing better than simply walking around town with no plan or destination. Explore your neighborhood or other parts of your community and look at all the things around you. Keep your phone tucked away and use this as an opportunity to slow down. Allow yourself to marvel at the trees or street art as you take in all the scents and sounds around you. Your senses will thank you for it.
3. Go vinyl record shopping
In this day and age, it’s rare to hold a record in your hands. For many years these records were the only way we listened to music. But records are still being made today by independent artists who prefer their sound over digital products. You can find all types of genres and albums at stores that sell vinyl.
It’s okay if you don’t know what to look for as you shop around. Sometimes it’s more fun to vinyl shop aimlessly. And, yes, it’s okay to shop by the cover. You never know when an album you go home with will become your absolute favorite, and that’s the excitement of the non-digital world.
4. Have a dance party
If you have a vinyl record player at home or know a friend who does, get together for a dance party and pop in the new record you bought. Or, you can always stay at home and boogie alone.
Music from the past is different than what you hear today and may give you a sense of nostalgia. Allow yourself to move around freely as you experience the authentic sounds playing from something other than your usual Bluetooth speaker.
5. Go to a vintage-inspired clothing shop
Vintage shopping is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Go shopping at your favorite vintage store or thrift store to look for vintage fashion. Or, if you’ve never been before, explore small businesses nearby that you can support!
Even if you don’t buy anything, browsing through these shops is fun in itself. Especially if the store is themed around the era you’re most interested in or has a hip ambiance. It’s exciting to see so many different styles of clothing that were popular in previous decades, but even more exciting once you start to try things on. Who knows? You might walk out with a fierce new outfit and Steve Nicks type of attitude to boot.
