How to Wear Houndstooth & Brights

by Sammy Leave a Comment

Last night in the good ole’ Dub C [aka West Chester, Pennsylvania] we celebrated my brother’s [George] 20th birthday at a thai restaurant, Jazmine, near my Stepmom’s/Dad’s comfy condo. On the menu: vegetables, spring rolls, and tofu. Lots & lots of tofu.

I can’t believe he’s 20 years old. I remember when I was 20 years old. Hate to say it but … it really DOES feel just like yesterday.

So, to kick-off this Breezeway Beauty post, I wanted to include a pic of me & my bro. Do we look like twins? With only 3 1/2 years between us, we look a bit like twins. Especially now that I’ve chopped my hair and gone the way of Eddie Sedgwick.

George Davis & Samantha Davis. Twins? No. Siblings? Yet. Excited to see one another? Very yes.

Special thanks to George for the early Christmas gift — those gold earrings! Made by a local artist in West Chester, bought in West Chester, worn in West Chester & soon — beyond!

Houndstooth never gets old. I remember first falling in love with it when I studied abroad in London in 2006. While living there, the trend had hit a rise — you could buy just about ANYTHING in the houndstooth pattern, and in multiple colors as well — and was thus falling fast with High Street stores [a UK term for our equivalent of “mall” stores] picking up the print on the cheap.

Thankfully, the black & white print had a short-lived fame in the H&Ms and Forever 21s of the US. Now, when you see it, it’s a classic coat or a sleek blouse, like that above.

Case in point: Houndstooth is OK to wear. Phew. Because I love it and wouldn’t want anything more.

I like to add “rock edge” to typically preppy outfits. Like above: This belt looks like something you’d grab from Hot Topic. The silver studs and black leather combo isn’t too abrasive — adding a bit of rocker chic to what just looks like prep-on-color-speed.

Without the jacket.

My favorite ring. A thumb ring! Bought at the Dumbo Brooklyn Flea last winter.

The Look: Colors, Houndstooth & Tofu

The Earrings: Gift from George! Locally made & locally bought. Holler.

The Necklace: I honestly can’t remember. Note to self: When you can’t remember where you bought something, you have too much stuff.

Bracelets: Assorted consignment/thrift

The Blazer: Ann Taylor

The Houndstooth Shirt: H&M

The Belt: Thrift – borrowed from friend

The Skirt: Thrift – Bargain Thrift, Germantown, Philadelphia

[and below ….]

Boots: Steve Madden, Marshalls. Wear these babies everywhere [especially with the snow]
