Dressing Vintage on a Budget

by Nicole Leave a Comment

A lot of people think that you need to have a lot of money in order to be able to dress in a convincingly vintage way. This is, perhaps, not surprising because vintage clothing often looks far more sophisticated than the average outfit, but it is not necessarily the case that you need to spend more to achieve the expensive vintage look.

Below are some simple tips to help you achieve your dream vintage look on even the tiniest budget.

Hit the thrift stores

Table of Contents

  • Hit the thrift stores
  • Find jewelry at consignment stores
  • Sew your own outfits
  • Raid your family’s wardrobe
  • Join selling and swapping groups

The most obvious way to dress vintage on a tight budget is to hit the thrift stores, They typically have lots of great older outfits from crinolines to wiggle dresses, and they are usually priced much more affordably than the same stuff in vintage stores. Yes, you may need to spend some time hunting for bargains, but that’s all part of the fun of vintage dress.

Find jewelry at consignment stores

As well as being able to sell your unwanted jewelry to them to make money you can invest in vintage outfits, you can often find very affordable vintage jewelry pieces at local jewelry consignment stores too. This is often a cheaper option than buying from antique stores or auctions. Although that is not always the case, so you should definitely do your research before heading out to buy a bargain.

Dressing Vintage on a Budget

Sew your own outfits

Of course, one of the best ways to dress in a vintage style and keep the costs down is to learn how to sew. Once you know the basics of sewing and knitting, you can start buying patterns and fabrics and creating your own dresses and sweaters and anything else you fancy. Of course, this is not always a cheap option, depending on your choice of fabrics, but you can keep the price down by purchasing used fabrics, repurposing old clothes, or making smarter choices at the haberdashery.

Raid your family’s wardrobe

If you have older family members who are aware around during the period you are interested in, ask them if they would be willing to share their wardrobes with you. Many older people keep the clothing of their youth, even if they are no longer able to fit into it, so they might be only too happy to let you have a piece or two, and it’s a great way to bond with older family members too!

Join selling and swapping groups

There are numerous vintage clothing selling and swapping groups on Facebook and other social media sites where you can definitely pick up a bargain or two, especially if you are quick of the bat and offer to buy for a fair price as sdoon as things are posted. You can also make some great friends who share your passion for all things vintage this way too.

As you can see, dressing in a vintage style is totally achievable no matter how big or small your budget may be. So, what are you waiting for?
